While we are talking about those crazy Democrats... Mayor Daley may have lost his mind The city of Chicago and the state of Illinois are in a tither over what Mayor Daley did with Meigs field. I know this is not a religious question but am interested in your response to this action. Late last night Mayor Daley ordered bulldozers to tear up Meigs Field on the Lake front in Chicago. He has tried to get rid of this field for many years but the friends of Meigs have fought him at every turn. It is a fairly well used airport and quite a boon to downtown Chicago. Under cover of night he had the runway torn up and stranded 16 private planes. I know Daley is (was?) a savvy politician but this is going way over the edge. Do you think he's lost his mind? ISTM just another example of the arrogance of a public officeholder. I don't think we have any "democrats" anymore, just politicians pushing agendas, without regard for the opinions of the people.

I saw the picture on the front page of the Tribune. I thought to myself: this is nuts. Unless the Mayor has knowledge that the Chinese Communists were planning to use the airport to invade the Loop, it seemed like a dumb move.
However, in Washington DC, we have National Airport right on the Virginia side of the Potomac about 3 miles from the White House, and there was serious discussion of closing it down for 'security reasons' -- just after a grand brand-new terminal was built at a cost of several bazillion dollars. It's still open since it is an easy exit for members of Congress going home and not having to go 39 miles to Dulles Airport in N. Virginia or Baltimore-Washington-International (BWI) about 40 miles from the White House, outside Baltimore.
I kind of like airports. And I'm sorry that Meigs Field has been chopped up. I've never personally landed there - just O'Hare and the ever-lovely Midway - but I think that a General Aviation field should be respected, even if it only serves the hyper-rich Lear Jet owners.
What would the Jetsons think?
Blessings!

Seems to me that politicians have an uncanny attraction to bulldozers. (We have a recording of a marvelous little ditty called "If I Had A Bulldozer" but that's another tale...)
Several years ago, the then-mayor of Cow-lumbus, one Buck Rinehart (a dyed-in-the-wool Republican, BTW) personally took a bulldozer to a piece of the old Ohio Penitentiary. Like Mayor Daley, he was trying to add some oomph to his agenda. Just like Mayor Daley, he ended up looking pretty stupid.(Remember Mike Dukakis and the tank??)
I don't think politicians should be allowed near heavy equipment.

It's worth noting that Mayor Daley just won another four year term without any real opposition. As the talking heads on CNN, MSNBC or Fox News Channel will gladly tell you, four years is an eternity in politics. Simply put, even if a serious chellanger appears in four years, the voters will have all but forgotten this little escapade (just like we forgot about the Millenium Park project cost over-runs this time around).
Yours,
kl

I love the John Kass columns on Daley. He's the only one who speaks out.Krylos is right. It will be forgotten in 4 yrs. BTW when I was a little child living in Chicago one of the first words you learned after mama was punch 10. I grew up 2 blocks due west of what was then the 10 Ward Democratic headquarters. Young Daley did learn most of what he knows from Big Daddy Daley.

Dear Friends: If you are foreordained by the gods of Chicago politics to be Mayor-For-Life, playing a little tic-tac-toe on Meigs Field apparently is one of the more enjoyable trappings of the City's Emperor. . . er, Mayor. No, the Junior has not gone nuts. He is simply doing his job with crass and, I might add, with finality. Long live, Chicago! ! ! (Dan, Chicago and the State of Illinois might both be a-teeter because of this brouhaha but are, certainly not oblige to contribute a TITHER to the citizens cause!) AmdG

Dear Baba: ...and right after you learned "punch 10," there came: "vote early, vote often." Yours, kl

Sure, those in cemetaries often voted two or three times in the hey day of Daddy Daley's regime. I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing isn't happening now. Chicago is a beautiful city whose politics are more fascinating than any other city's in the country.
BTW some are suggesting that we send Daley to the renewed Iraq. People there are very used to his type of politics.

Oh, please. This stuff can't hold a candle to Boston. "Vote often and early for James Michael Curley". (Mayor of Boston.) He got indicted, convicted and sent to jail - and while in jail was re-elected.
Top that!!
This MidWestern chicanery is just wussy. The President of the Univ. of Mass., former speaker of the Massachusetts House, has a brother in the Irish Mafia who was "working with the FBI", and is now on the 10 most wanted list and is "in hiding". Lots of people in Irish South-Boston have 'disappeared'. Even the Italian Mafia backs off on this one.
Blessings! (Or ELSE!! We KNOW where you live.)

Dr. John, This time I will concede to your conclusions. I don't know of any comparable ones, except, perhaps, during the 1920's, that Chicago has. We bow to the deeper corruption of Eastern cities, especially of Boston . Dan Lauffer
