I will be travelling to Budapest at the end of May. Any suggestions about Orthodox or Greek Catholic churches worth visiting would be appreciated.

There is a very muraculous icon and a monastery in Mariapocz, which is a place of pilgrimage for both Greek Catholics and Orthodox.

I found this adress where you can find information about the GGC in Hungary and the adresses of the parishes, but i don't know if it works:

szaplonc@mail.tiszanet.hu

You can also reach the Eparchy through its adress. It has its see in Nyiregyhaza:

Hajdudorogi Puspoki Hivatal, Pf. 60, Bethlen Gabor u. 5, H-4400 Nyiregyhaza, Magyarorszag
Telephone: (42)415-901
Fax: 415-911

Christ is Risen!

Mariapocs is a wonderful place but it is a couple of hours from Budapest. There are 2 GC parishes in Budapest, one in Buda the other in Pest. There is one MP parish in the city and there are Serbian parishes not too far (not walking distance, about :30-:45 by taxi or train-HEV) in Szentendre. I can offer you more details if you will contact me privately. I have been to all of the above churches and then some. I will be happy to offer my observations about them.

Tony

Christ is Risen!

Enjoy your trip to my wife's homeland.

When I went last year, I visited a number of Greek Catholic (and Orthodox) churches in Budapest and throughout the country -- not many Orthodox churches ouside of the major cities, however.

My favorite churches were out in the northeastern part of Magyarorszag. Those peasant GC churches were magnificent, especially the floor to ceiling icon screens.

If you get the chance, take the three hour trip to Mucsony -- my father-in-law's village and the home of the Rusyn Museum. SS. Peter and Paul GC Church is among the most beautiful I saw.

I'd also take the trip to Mariapocs, where, incidentally, my wife was baptized. My son had a great time kissing the icons and crawling around beneath the weeping icon.

Feltamadt Krisztus!

In Christ,
Theophilos
