If you had to put forward one reason for why you're a Greek Catholic what would that be?

Dear Myles,

I would say that it is the tradition I was born and raised in and that has spiritually nourished me throughout my life, giving me complete inner satisfaction in my walk with the Lord, while still being able to appreciate other Christian traditions.

I'm not very good at Greek anymore but I do read a little. Does that count?

Actually I'm Eastern Catholic for a couple of reasons:

1. The liturgy is Divine.

2. I love the Pope.

biggrin

My husband was Polish National Catholic and I was a good ol' Southern Baptist. We are a sure sign that God has a wonderful sence of humor. Deacon Stan wouldn't be Southern Baptist and I wouldn't be Roman Catholic. WE, and I say WE cause we looked elsewhere, doing our own thing, barking up the wrong trees, attended a lot of other churches, wasted a lot of time. HOWEVER, when we surrendered to God and all was said and done - through a series of divine appointments, we spent a morning talking with Archpriest Michael Moran, attended Divine Liturgy the next day(it truly was divine in every sence of the word), didn't understand a thing that was said except for Fr.Mike's homily. WE KNEW WE WERE HOME!

I ain't gonna argue with God! wink

It didn't stop there, we entered through the Ruthenian Byzantines, my husband is now one of their deacons, but we serve in a Melkite parish. Go figure - GOD HAS A SENCE OF HUMOR! biggrin

My bishop is in communion with the Bishop of Rome and I like Metaxa and baklava! biggrin

On a serious note, it is quite simple - I was born into the family. Why do I stay? That's a totally different discussion...

One of the first pamphlets printed by the Johnstown Diocese was entitled "Why Am I a Greek Catholic of the Orthodox Faith," using Greek Catholic as an ethnic title. biggrin

So, in that case, what DOES it mean to be Greek Catholic? wink

ROFL!!! biggrin

PS) Dave by Greek Catholic I meant 'Greek Catholic' as one would say 'Roman Catholic'. Eastern Catholic would be more apt cos that'd include the Orientals too.

As Christopher Derrick once put it, Our Lord Jesus Christ founded one Church to be our mother. He did not found a gaggle of incessantly squabbling aunts, or a loose federation of fissiparous "jurisdictions".

Or to put it another way: it is impossible to join any specific Orthodox Church without having some other Orthodox Church promptly denounce me as a schismatic and probable heretic. This unfortunately includes specific Orthodox Churches whom I respect highly and love dearly. One might say that they have devalued the currency of anathemas and excommunications.
