Agreed - even if you know the music you are singing in Church you do need to have it in front of you - it's called safety
A Church choir singing at a non Church function - albeit singing Church music should be able to sing without their music - I was also brought up that way. Yes - I could sing Messiah without music - I did when done in a hall - but when done in Church , it was there in front of me.
There is a difference here - one is giving a performance with all the showmanship that entails - the other is singing in Church to Glorify God
