The Dead Theologian Society is Roman Catholic innovation. However, I think it could be adapted very well for the Eastern Church with their permission of course. It is an excellent way of bringing the Scriptures, theolgy and history of the Church to life. It seems to offer the mystery of our faith in such a way as to bring it so alive. Taking the kids totally out of the worlds environment, surrounding them with the works of the Early Fathers of the Church. I know one of the young men that helped start it, he is a man of stong faith and conviction totally dedicated to the teaching authority of the Church. http://www.dtsroom.com/what_is_DTS.html

Also, you can search other sites on the web and see how it is working at the different churches.

Pani Rose,

Ummmm, that is an interesting name for the group. - Dead Theologians Society which of course reminds me of The Dead Poet's Society. I will now check out the link. Thanks. wink

Blessings from...

Mary Jo..who just sent you a P.M. in case you didn't see that little light blinking up in the left hand corner.

What about my own society - the Society of Armchair Theologians? or S.A.T.?

Seriously though...

I love the idea. I've also thought that Byzantines should develop an institute for Patristic study in English that would help introduce Westerners to the wealth of the Church Fathers of East and West - beyond just Augustine and Jerome, of course! (Oh you mean there's more? ;-) ) For many, this might be their entree to developing an interest in the Christian East.

Just read the link about The Dead Theologians Society I think it can and will work wonders with youth. This is the kind of thinking and education which won me so long ago. We need more of this for our Catholic youth from both lungs of the church.

Pani Rose,

Again, thank you for this website.

I think we'd have to find a way to Easternize some of the practices, though. They meditate on the Rosary and have a chaplet, which are great things, but it would be even better if we could come up with something more Eastern. That logo's pretty Latin, too, but one step at a time!

As I've told Pani Rose, we're trying to get a teen group going at our parish and we're looking for ideas and materials. If anyone can help out with suggestions, I'm sure it will benefit more than just me.

Gordo,

Armchair Theologian? That was my alias for several years on byzantines.net, the now defunct forum prior to this one. Everyone died on that forum from too much flame throwing. Got out of hand.

Joe -

LOL!!! Greetings fellow armchair dweller! How do you like the current "sits im leben" cool here at byzcath? Better than the flame throwers at byzantine.net? I don't think I ever participated on that forum.

My one question - since you were the first, does that make you the chair of our esteemed society? biggrin

ROFL!

Any Sitz im Leben where the bushel basket isn't extinguishing the light is good, especially if its on a hilltop.

It is refreshing to hear voices of hope and encouragement rather than my way or the highway policy.

Fr. Tom Loya's parish family has light rays that reach far across state boundaries. No bushel basket there.

BTW, my "sits im leben" was intended to be a play on words...you know - chairs? sitting?

And I agree with your assessment of the parish. My hope is that the bushels are removed from all BCC parishes!

Sitz im leben hier is gut, sehr gut. Nicht wahr? Gott ist auch gut!

It has been a while since I used the term and then only when writing research papers. But I think that translated literally it is a position or situation in life, sort of a 'sitting' position. And on the byzcath.org forum our situation is not only good but full of life! Things sit well here and those who sit sit well as well. Oh, well! shocked biggrin wink

Glory to God!

I gottcha. You don't have to draw a picture. biggrin

I also heard other mispronunciations, but I won't divulge them here out of respect.
