Every Sunday morning on my way to my Byzantine Catholic Church, I listen to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on the radio, followed by the Jewish Soul Hour. I love L.A.!! Yes, they do! Their music is superb. As an organist, I have always had a deep love for the instrument in the Tabernacle. It is magnificent. And I also admire their family values and overall decency. They are not bad people, by any measure, although I choose not to believe their religion.

Dear ByaznTN: You stole my thunder! One can certainly argue with their theology, Joseph Smith's credibility, their Masonic rituals, etc. etc. etc. However, their attitude of a life focused on family, hard-work and clean living is something that we all can learn from. That having been said, has anyone ever been to Salt Lake City? Maybe it's just me, but Temple Square gave me the creeps. Yours, hal

Dear Hal:
Some 415 Utes (majority of whom could be Mormons), must have felt the same way as you did about Temple Square as they joined the Catholic Church at last Saturday's Easter Vigil, courtesy of the Salt Lake City Diocese alone, adding to the approximately 200,000 Catholics in the State of Utah.

I have heard that the Mormon reputation for "family values" is more PR than anything; that Utah has a high divorce and illegitamacy rate. Does anyone know if there is truth in this allegation?

Dear Amado: Either that or they agreed with me that the Mormon Tabernacle Choir is not as good as its reputation. In all seriousness - 415? That's great! To God be the Glory! There is also a GO Church less than a mile from Temple Square. In can only imagine what the Moron-, I mean, Mormons, have to say about them. Yours, hal

Dear Hal: That's what the USCCB 2005 diocesan reports say! But compared to the 2004 Easter Vigil, when the Diocese of Salt Lake City reported 557 new Catholics, this year must be a downer for its RCIA Team! The Morons, er Mormons, are slowly seeing the True Light! (Pardon my slip of the finger; I suffer from it occasionally like you do! ) Amado

Dear Friends, My Mormon friends who confronted me told me they believe that Jesus is equal in Divinity to God the Father. I told them that that wasn't what I had heard and read. Are they pulling my leg just to get me to convert? Do the Mormons have an Eastern Rite? Alex

The Mormons are not as monolithic as some believe. They have actually had some groups split off and go their own way. I think there is even a reformed LDS church in Missouri? - I think. The reformed group exists but I am not sure about the location. I have no idea what the disputes were about that caused these splits in the denomination, but it would be interesting to know.

Dear Alex: Yes, I think they have "Eastern" rites. Just ask any one from New York or other State on the East Coast! Amado

Alex- Mormons confuse Christians because they will use Christian terms like "Trinity" and "God" and "salvation" but mean something entirely different from what orthodox Christians mean. Yes, they believe Jesus is equal to the Father, but then, what is the Father? A glorified man, an evolved intelligence. With a physical body, I might add. In one sense, we are all equal to "God" but then as there is no Supreme, Omnipotent, Ever-Existing Spirit, who is the Source of all being, and creates worlds out of nothing, they really don't believe in God, as we understand that term, at all. At least the Muslim God is recognizably God, not some bizarre construct. That said, I ask all to refrain from punning "Morons" from "Mormons". That is unnecessarily insulting and should not be engaged in on this astute forum. I mean how would you like it if someone called us "Bizarrentines"? Hey, that actually might fit here sometimes...

Oh, yes: the Reorganized Latter Day Saints, recently renamed the Community of Christ, is a relatively tiny offshoot [though bigger than the even tinier numerous offshoots], and is much closer to orthodox Christianity than the LDS; they do, as far as I can tell, believe in the true God, though they believe Joseph Smith to be a prophet, whose message was altered by Brigham Young. I guess even though God restored the gospel after 1800 years of darkness it got lost again...

I too, have heard about their high divorce rate and that a large percentage of them are in some sort of Psycho-therapy, due to the strains that their "image" holds them to.

My reaction? "What? They're singing from notes?!? If they were as good as everyone says they are they'd have their music memorised!" Guess I was 'spoiled' by ethnic choirs, or just a music snob in the making. Σώσον, Κύριε, καί διαφύλαξον ηάς από τών Βασιλιάνικων τάξεων!

Well, I'm a member of a Byzantine choir and I would be lost without my "notes"! Of course, I'm still officially Latin Rite ... hmm, that must be it ...

OK, let me clarify. There is a difference of setting. I also sing in a church choir and, through repetition, I know most of the materials by heart I would not attempt to sing a liturgy without music in front of me. But a concert setting is different. Have I dug myself out of my hole? Or am I now even deeper? Σώσον, Κύριε, καί διαφύλαξον ηάς από τών Βασιλιάνικων τάξεων!
