Istanbul, Turkey - The Ecumenical Patriarchate is proud to announce an official web site dedicated to the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople from November 29 December 1, 2006. This site is now online at http://www.patriarchate.org

This website will provide resources for both the media and general public and currently offers extensive information about Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, Pope Benedict XVI and the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Additional features of the web site include online videos produced by Greek Orthodox Telecommunications (GOTelecom), a virtual reality tour of the Ecumenical Patriarchate by the Department of Internet Ministries, and a historical timeline of the Ecumenical Patriarchate from a CD-ROM produced by the Department of Religious Education, podcasts, and other multimedia elements.

Updated news about the visit as well as addresses related to both prelates efforts to make peace and build bridges of truth across religious, ethnic, environmental and political divides will be updated on the web site throughout the visit.

Have you been watching EWTN? The Ecumenical Patriarchate and not the Turkish government is facilitating the press centre. According to Joan Lewis they've done a fantastic job and been especially hospitable to everyone. Very nice, very nice. It seems that relations between Old and New Rome are really on the up, no?

Dear Prof.:

Impressive as a dedicated website but, after all is said and done, the Ecumenical Patriarchate (or the Patriarchate of Constantinople) has become and remains a mere "paper tiger" as we all too well know!

EP Bartholomew's original invitation in 2005 was countermanded by Turkey and the official visit of Pope Benedict was reset for 2006, which is now happenning as we write. By this simple but singular act, Turkey's government in no unclear terms defined the status of the EP: that it is not a separate and independent entity within Turkey.

Now comes the importance of Pope Benedict's visit. It is hoped by the EP that the plight of Christians in Turkey, both Catholic and Orthodox, is highlighted during the Pope's visit that Turkey's application for EU accession would be weighed further down negatively until Turkey is "forced" to relax its stranglehold on the Ecumenical Patriarchate and on other Christians, i.e., respect and uphold religious freedom as one of the cornerstones of basic human rights.

(BTW, Catholics in Turkey currently number about 32,000, approximately 17,000 of whom are Latins. The others are Armenian Catholics and Chaldean Catholics. The Episcopal Conference of Catholic Bishops of Turkey is composed of 6 bishops, with 47 parishes, 68 priests, 98 male and female religious, four permanent deacons, five major seminarians and 28 catechists. I don't know the number of the Orthodox but I read it recently that there are less than 8,000 Orthodox Christians throughout Turkey?)

Even if academically speaking, what do you think is the solution to the EP's problem(s)?

The media is paying attention to the Muslim/Christian aspect to all of this. I doubt if there will be much said about anything else.

Another great site is www.popeandpatriarch.com [popeandpatriarch.com] which is administered by ACROD and RC joint group. They've got some great blogs and pics from the man on the street perspective.

Interesting TV. I don't expect anything of substance to come from this visit. There have been joint declarations in the past and the Orthodox Church and the Catholic church are still seperate and will remain so for the foreseable futute.
