I found this article on Fox News. It is interesting how removed I feel from pop culture with our non-functioning television (it is essentially a neutered DVD monitor). At the same time, I would be a fool to deny any influence from the pop culture through school and friends, music and the internet. The death of Anna Nicole - a tragedy anyone with an ounce of sense could predict - should be a warning to party-hard youth. The media made her into a monster, dependent upon their attentions for $$$. And, of course, they made their share at her expense. She basked in the fleeting glory of the idols of wealth, pleasure and power. (But for the grace of God anyone of us my also be subject to the same temptations - all we would require would be the opportunity.) But, alas, the fruit of sin is death, while the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Prayers for her soul and for all involved.

Gordo

GRRR! Anna Nicole Is Dead; Let's Hope 'Girls Gone Wild' Take Note
Friday, February 09, 2007
By Mike Straka

The tragic life and times of Anna Nicole Smith have come to an end.

As of this writing, we don't know how she died. But to say that this very sad news comes as a surprise would be a lie.

Anna Nicole was over-exposed as a hard-partying, ditzy blonde who lived the high life. She married a man 63 years her senior who was worth hundreds of millions of dollars, and after her husband died she found herself embroiled in a bitter lawsuit with her adult stepchildren.

Last year, her 20-year-old son died of a drug overdose right after Smith gave birth to a baby daughter. Father to be determined.

Smith was famous for making unpredictable public appearances while drunk, high or both. In short, her life was a train wreck.

And Hollywood, which loves a train wreck, fed off that frenzy. Anyone who tuned in once to her reality show could see that the potential for an early death was very high.

So let Anna Nicole's sudden death come as a warning bell for all the rest of Hollywood's creations. The Tara Reids, Paris Hiltons, Lindsay Lohans, Courtney Loves and Britney Spearses of the world need to take heed.

It's time to rein them in.

The cycle of Hollywood creating stars and then abandoning them to the point where they're nothing but punchlines and water-cooler talk has to end.

Anna Nicole Smith, for several years, had become a cartoon character, and the entertainment press fed into her image.

There will be a whole lot of hand-wringing over Anna Nicole's death: Was the media responsible for her pain? Did E! take advantage of her with her reality show? Did her diet commercials force her to lose too much weight in the wrong way?

The truth is, until all of the facts come out, we won't know who's to blame.

Newsweek is putting out an issue where the cover story is all about Girls Gone Wild, detailing how our young starlets' hard-partying ways are having a negative influence on the nation's youth.

Anna Nicole's death should be seen as an example of what can happen when one lets her life spiral out of control. Perhaps the families and so-called "handlers" of the new batch of young starlets will do whatever it takes to rein in their famous loved ones so they don't end up like her.

One of the TV newspeople said that Smith was famous for being famous, not for actually accomplishing anything. Smith seems to have had a tragic life. It seems to me that she spent her short life pursuing a false god.

Indeed, Gordon, my unworthy prayers for her soul, because 'no one lives and sinneth not'. I suspect hers was a tortured life of sorts--a simple country girl raised in a large family with no father, blessed with good looks, and who probably had a good and uncunning soul which was lured by fame and fortune, manipulated by men, etc.
My prayers also for her son, who looked so sweet and tortured as well. It must have been tough for a boy to see his mother do the things she did, pose as she did, and to hear her be the butt of unsavory and inappropriate jokes.

Lord have mercy!

(I do tend to say a prayer for the souls of some celebrities, because it is sad to think that they have no one to pray for their souls...by coincidence, today is the first 'psychosavato' or 'Saturday of the souls' in Orthodoxy...I attended the service this morning)

In Christ,
Alice

Dear Alice,

I sympathize with your comments. When Larry King first interviewed Anna Nicole Smith, he said she was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. I guess what should have been a blessing became a curse. She simply was not a strong enough person to handle her looks...which in itself was a talent. A case very similar to Marilyn Monroe.

She was divorced twice, had a son by her second marriage, and was enticed to pose for Playboy magazine. At that time and age, these girls from poor backgrounds and without a father, were highly manipulated and poorly treated. She said that she married the old billionaire because he was kind to her and her son. I had to laugh today when seeing a picture of them together. He had such a sly grin on his face. I think he wanted to fix his family, and no doubt even if it was true that they never lived together, he must have surely enjoyed having her around. wink

She was then again manipulated for a reality TV show, gained a great deal of weight, and ended up being the butt of jokes of many a night time comedian. It seems she was a highly vulnerable personality. Her fight with the billionaire's son, who also died in the middle of it,(one wonders if there was some curse on all of them) was eventually brought to the Supreme Court and was considered a very serious legal case...one with far reaching ramifications.

All in all, her baby stands to inherit hundreds of millions of dollars, and two men are claiming to be the father. They say it's a pity that there was a legal case in the first place. Anna Nicole Smith never received a penny, and the money is in the billions. As one legal expert said, the family could easily have parted with some of it. frown

I think we should pray for people like her, that are too naive to know what they are getting into. What a pity, all she had to do was turn to our Lord for help. But then again, maybe she did at the end, and in His mercy took her before she could sin again.

We can only hope she did turn to our Lord in the end, I firmly believe His mercy and love call all in their final moments. Let`s hope her death will make some people think twice about life in the fast lane.
