Some most interesting photos have been posted on the Eparchy of Presov, Slovakia's website, from two summer pilgrimages (odpusty) this year:

In Klokocov [grkatpo.sk] (August 17);

In Ljucina (L'utina) (August 28-31):
Album 1 [grkatpo.sk]
Album 2 [grkatpo.sk]
Album 3 [grkatpo.sk]

(Keep in mind that Ljucina is also a place of pilgrimage for the Orthodox Church in Slovakia.)

It's amazing how much of the Byzantine spirit our brethren in Slovakia have reclaimed in just a few years. They were on the brink of completely becoming Roman Catholics (which the Vatican put a stop to, fortunately) and now they actually look like Greek Catholics again. Now if only they would get rid of those guitars and tambourines... :p

Three cheers for Vladyka Milan and his very Byzantine vestments (rap around Omophorion), he looks like he's a Melkite bishop!

Three Cheers Indeed for Bishop Milan.
If anyone can find out more specific information about these pilgrimages and send it to me, I would be most grateful. (I do not, alas, read any Slovak).

Yes, Vladyka Milan has nice taste in vestments. I also rather like the pics of him playing soccer. wink I met him in Pittsburg back in '99 and was very impressed. There are some people who just give you a good feeling and he's one of those people.

Speaking of the Presov Eparchy, it seems that Vladyka Jan Babjak will be in the US for Sugarloaf's upcoming anniversary. Vladyka Milan Sasik of Uzhorod will also be here. Are these hierarchs going anywhere else while they're here?

I also like in the photo album the "Spomienka na svedkov viery - Hrabsk 2003". This is the home parish of Bishop Hopko. The priest there keeps a nice little library with literature on Bishop, with some of the vestments and vessels, and books that he used.

Ugh. I'm gonna pretend I didn't look at that one.
-- Adoration of a Latin host in a Latin monstrance;
-- Liturgy facing the people;
-- A folk "choir" (band?).

Count us all lucky that didn't become the model Liturgy for the whole Eparchy. It could have turned out that way!

Dear Friends,

I know that for us "Odpust" means "Indulgence" - or am I wrong? Could it also mean "pilgrimage?

Also, what does it mean when Orthodox use that term to describe pilgrimages to miraculous Icons (as occurs in some areas in Eastern Europe?

Any ideas?

Alex,

I am sure you are correct about the etymology of the word otpust but I have always understood it as simply meaning pilgrimage.

I dont see a problem with the meaning indulgence for otpust (odpust). The saints indulge us by listening our prayers and interceding before the Lord on our behalf. A pilgrimage in honor of a miraculous icon would simply be a prayer to that particular saint asking that he or she indulge us by praying and interceding on our behalf. Use of the term indulge does not have to be associated with the Roman Catholic doctrine of indulgences.

Of course you're not wrong. There's plenty of "traditional" Greek Catholic prayerbooks out there with indulgenced prayers in them. They are marked "Otpust 40 dni" (40 days indulgence), "Otpust 3 dni" (3 days indulgence) or something like that.

But the "dismissal" of the Divine Liturgy is also called Otpust.

Anyway, Alex, what do you think of our shirtless bishop-athlete? wink

(When Rome beatifies him, will they have to create a new category? Bishop-Martyr, Bishop-Confessor, Bishop-Halfback... :p )

Is this a hmmm... guitar?
From what I see in the pictures this takes place inside the church, but I can be wrong, right?

The other pictures display that the Divine Liturgy is being celebrated, and the guitar appears there, again. (But I can be wrong, probably.)

Sorry, those are Greek Catholic nuns, they're Basilians...
