Maybe if the US stopped trying to see how many former Soviet Republics and countries bordering Russia they can set military bases up in, perhaps Putin and others would see reason regarding links with Iran.

The Russians don't like US military bases ringing there country anymore than Americans would like Russian bases in Canada, Mexico, The Bahamas, Bermuda etc. To them, it's our country that appears to be looking for trouble.

This may sound like a dumb question, but missiledefense systems don't sound very offensive-oriented to me...?

I've said this before,possibly on this forum as well, but I'll say it again,Putin is simply another ex-communist very much like Slobodan Milosevic,who is now playing the nationalism card.I notice that political liberals who blubber about the fact that the Pope was in the Hitler Youth(as a young teenager,mind you)or about what the Pope recently said about Islam are strangly silent about the fact that in Putin we are dealing with an ex KGB officer.Anyone who even supposedly aided the Nazis in ANY way is still being hounded 61 years after the fall of Hitler(remember John Demjanjuk?),but we are supposed to trust any ex-KGB man,just 15 years after the fall of the Soviet Union?
