Has anyone seen "Into Great Silence"-the 3 hour documentary on the Carthusian monks of France?

I have not seen it, but over at Shawn Tribe's blog, The New Liturgical Movement [thenewliturgicalmovement.blogspot.com], there are very recent postings about the DVD. Should be dated around yesterday (March 19th) or the day before. Check it out.

Apparently it's very moving. Not a word is spoken throughout the documentary, with exception to the chanting of the monks and the liturgical celebrations.

The austerity practiced at Le Grande Chartreuse is, even as evidenced merely by the pictures, as breathtakingly beautiful as it is demanding.

Just a few points, having watched it last year.

It certainly is very moving. There are bits of dialogue - when the monks go on their weekly nature walk. The conversation is quite interesting.

It's a beautiful, simple, quiet life. Though the austerity can't be that bad if they're permitted meat.

Well, meat would be a small comfort, to my mind, with all the other regulations. I wouldn't last two days.

Actually, I think I'd enjoy it for like a week, and then probably not so much!

It is being released in Canada first...later in the fall in the US.

So I would try Amazon Canada ?
