Why should the indonesian archipelago be considered "one nation".
The East Timorese do not speak indonesian, do not profess the same religion as the vast majority of indonesians, do not want to be indonesians... they don't even look like indonesians... why should they be considered part of the "indonesian nation"?
Just because it makes sense geographically? A lot of countries would cease to exist by those standards...
East Timor was illegaly occupied by indonesia. The occupation was never recognised by the international community. It was not a case of Indonesia "reclaiming" what was theirs, East Timor never belonged to a nation called Indonesia.

I am unfamiliar with the reality of West Timor. But to say that the East Timorese are indonesians just because their West Timorese brethren are, seems to make as much sense as saying that the french basques are actually spanish because they are in every way similar to their spanish basque brethren.
