A few days ago one of the moderators on another section of the Forum suggested that a thread might be established in "Town Hall" for those who might wish to contribute something on the subject of animals.

For openers, those interested should have a look at

It's quite a sight!

The only creatures I love slightly more than house cats http://www.worldisround.com/articles/10071/photo3.html

Don't have any as pets yet, but hopefully someday.

Let's stick with the animals! Granted that there are some Biblical references to insects (including the information that ST. John the Baptist ate locusts and wild honey), and that bees are generally considered benevolent even though they sometimes sting, we can probably get along without pictures of large spiders.

In general, posters of web-connections should try not to post links which will lead directly to quite undesirable materials.

Sorry if I seem to be straining out gnats but swallowing camels!

Dear Lawrence,

The elephants are nice - thanks for the posting. In return, here's an anecdote which I have straight from the source. Bishop Isidore of Toronto was once visiting India with some friends, and they decided that since they were in India they might as well, for once in their lives, go for a ride on elephants. This took a bit of arranging, but nothing too drastic, and the party set off, each ensconced on a pachyderm, with a guide similarly equipped.

Well, the tour route took them through a village; all the villagers prostrated themselves as the party passed. Bishop Isidore commented to his friends: "This must be a Christian village - see with what reverence they are venerating the Bishop!"

Hearing this, guide responded: "Well, Your Grace, I must tell you, first, that this is not a Christian village, and, second, that in fact the people are prostrating themselves to worship the elephants!"

So it is. Saint John Chrysostom exhorted people not to imitate the ancient Egyptians, who "worshipped cats and feared onions"!

Christ is Risen!
