At the recent Byzantine spirituality day for women in Munhall, Pa, the keynote speaker was a former Catholic woman who is now Muslim and head of the Islamic center of studies. She spoke about the similarity of our faiths. Does not the Muslim believe that Jesus is merely a prophet? Do they not reject the Trinity? Is this taking ecumenism a little too far? Would the Orthodox bring in a muslim as a keynote speaker for their faithful women?

This seems odd to me. Why not a Byzantine Catholic woman who talks about the richness and beauty of our faith?

Many people who do this kind of thing think they know everything there is to know about Catholic spirituality and are bored with it and think it somehow inferior. Besides they may be left leaning and consider Islam to be the latest darling that they should defend.

I don't so much fault them for having the speaker. I fault them for not having a Catholic speaker as well.

Indeed, why not? Dan offered some reasonable insights as to perhaps the reasons . . .

I very much enjoy chatting with people of other faiths about their beliefs; however, if someone is passing off an event as a Byzantine Catholic women's spiritual gathering of some sort, then it seems the focus should be as "advertised." That's probably not really the forum for an ex-Catholic talking about their new faith.
