Well at least now his eyes are open and he is a Catholic lol! Stephanos I Which reminds me of the following joke: Hilary Clinton was out jogging around the White House when she saw a little boy pulling a wagon with new born puppies. And being the political opportunist that she is she stopped and said AWWWWWWW how cute, Yep the litle boy said, and ya know what? They are all democratics. She could hardly wait to get home to tell Bill the news. 2 weeks latter Bill was out jogging and came across the same boy. He leaned down and said AWWWWWWW how cute. And they are all democrats. Nooooope! No Way! said the little boy emphatically! They're Republicans! Yep thats what they are! "What?" Bill said. Two weeks ago you told my wife they were all democrats! "Well shucks" said the little boy. That was before they had their eyes opened

Jerry Falwell (eternal memory) was always an enigma to me. as one who has a first hand knowledge of the Independent Baptist culture ( as an EC who went to an Independendent Baptist seminary), Rev. Falwell was but a reflection of the many facets of that culture.while IndyBaps (my shorthand for Independent Baptists)as a tradition have no love for Catholicism, individuals amongst them do hold Catholics as brothers and sisters in the Lord, as long as that Catholic can give a coherent answer as to his/her personal belief in the LORD Jesus Christ as personal Saviour, and that attitude amongst Indybaps is growing in the newere generations. how Falwell was able to work with Catholics, and wonder of wonders, Jews and lo, even MORMONS in a common cause is part of that enigma. you can rest assured that he caught hell from other IndyBaps from doing that very thing.yes, there has been a sorry history of racism in the South amongst both Independent and Southern Baptists, and yes, there is some residual racism left, but it is quite telling when Jesse Jackson, of all people, paid the man tribute when he said that Falwell had a heart for people (in so many words). I was displeased, but not surprised when Falwell along with Pat Robertson, blamed Gays, feminists, and everyone else they did not like for the attacks on 11 September 2001. that played into the hands of Osama and his ilk. I was placated when he was man enough to apologize for his ill considered, cruel, and just wrong statement. I thought he made a buffoon of himself when he shrieked that Tinky Winky was Gay. for spitework, I procured a Tinky Winky doll and had it on my desk to push a few buttons. oh,my Tinky Winky is now in the closet, and don't ye dast read anything into that (LOL). I never voted for anyone Falwell liked. I voted for John Anderson in 1980, and the list goes on. I know people who have worked with Falwell, and while they reflected a lot of their teacher's attitudes, but like Jesse Jackson said of Falwell, they have a heart for people, and I am glad to know them. there has been, for some time, a move towards a Christian view of social justice on the part of those preachers who shared Falwell's Weltanschauung. it is both refreshing and deeply moving to learn of these new attitudes (I think of James Robison for one). if Falwell had more time, I am certain that he would have been in this new view of things. rest in peace, Jerry, and may angles lead you to the presence. Much Love, Jonn

Ultimately, the Reverend Jerry Falwell was reviled most for condemning abortion as murder, and calling homosexual behaviour, pornography and immodest dress, sinful. In those areas he was on the same page as the Catholic and Orthodox churches.

What was that line from Hamlet, exactly? I think it was: "He was a man, take him for all in all, I shall not look upon his like again."
I've got mixed feelings about the late Rev. Jerry Falwell, but I will neither condemn him nor praise him. But I will certainly pray for him.

Let his evil deeds, if there are any, be interred with him and his good deeds sown and nurtured in our hearts.
May God have mercy on Jerry Falwell.

In those areas he was on the same page as the Catholic and Orthodox churches. Yes, he agreed with us Catholics and Orthodox on these issues, but he was also a supporter of Apartheid to the bitter end, and a Christian Zionist, two positions I very strongly disagree with. We should honor Rev. Jerry Falwell, and pray for his blessed repose. I did have problems with some of the views he promoted in his life time. But I recognize that he was a devout Christian, and had genuine concern about moral decadence in our society. People are complex, Jerry Falwell is no exception. Eternal Memory be to Jerry Falwell, may he dwell where all the just repose. Amen.

I wonder how many RC & EO Christians his missionaries lured away from the true Eucharist to crackers and grape juice? I don't think dying automatically makes you a good person. I disagree. Rev. Falwell stood up for Judeo-Christian morals; and he created the political movement to counter the forces of secular humanism that were overtaking the U.S. As for his missionary activities, God bless him. The Evangelicals might not have the fullness of Tradition, but they do have Christ: and they are eager to share Him with others. That is a far cry from much of mainsteam Churches, which seem content to not evangelize. I do not agree with everything Rev. Falwell said or stood for. And he said some zingers, which made me and others cringe. Nevertheless, I think he was a leading light for Christianity in the U.S.; and I was saddened at his passing. Dear John, I agree with you completely. I didn't enjoy his personality. He seemed smug, and it rubbed me the wrong way, but regardless, I knew where he was coming from. When he said that the immorality that exists in this nation led to 911, he might not have explained what he said correctly, and gave license to the media to misquote him, but it did not make him wrong. At least not according to Bible. As for turning people away from Christianity, that's a new one. He had many followers, and if anything, the Evangelicals have revived Christianity. Many a person would not be in any Church today, (and that includes Orthodox and Catholic), had it not be for him and all those that sacrifice everything in order to Evangelize God's Word. It appears that it's the main stream Protestant Churches, because of their liberal bend, are the one's that have been turning people away in the millions. God Bless, Zenovia

(one of my heroines!) LOL Dear Brian, I believe it was Aristotle that said 'Pan Metron Ariston'. In other words, every within moderation is the best. At the time of Eleanor Roosevelt, we desperately needed social changes in this nation. Today, the pendulum has swung way too far left. It needs to go back a little. Think about it! God Bless, Zenovia

Because this thread has been transferred to the Prayer forum, perhaps we should say on behalf of Rev. Falwell:
Lord have mercy !
Eternal Memory !
May the Theotokos intercede on his behalf !

Dear Friends,
Here is the problem I have with Rev. Jerry Falwell's comments about 911 and homosexuals and abortion.
In our spirituality, we should start with ourselves. Judgment begins with the house of God, as St. Peter says.
I do not want to see evil in others all the time. I need to start with myself. I pray that I have a good defense before the dread judgment seat of Christ. We Orthodox and Catholic Christians start with ourselves; our life is a life of penance.
I do not want to become smug in my self-righteousness, which is as filthy rags, according to Isaias.
Again and Again, I offer my prayers for the blessed repose of Rev. Falwell. I may disagree with him on many things, but he is my brother in Christ, and had a zeal for righteousness.

I did not personally move this thread here, but since it is here, and since I just had to delete a post that was not at all nice or prayerful to the deceased, I will close it now.
May our merciful God bring His servant, Jerry into His Kingdom!
Amen!
