It reminds me of an 80s movie called The Keep. eek

I'm also reminded of the Star Trek race called The Borg.

It reminds me of the Planet of the Apes.

All we need is Cornelius to give us the tour el' grande!

It is almost as bad as the whale carcass that was being built in San Bernardino, I believe. Anyone know what happened to that monstrosity?

Yes indeed to both of you: a Borg ship, the desolate feeling of planet of the Apes, and I will add to your observations, another Star Trek similarity: the Klingon homeworld! laugh

Alice,
(who loved 'Star Trek, the Next Generation', but says leave the futuristic alien architecture on the set) wink

Can I just say it is truly awful? And that statue of the Mother of God, with no face, she looks like she is wearing an astronaut helmet.

Talking about Borg ship, in a similar manner it is the political class in my country, where the politicians are as some borgs, listening to the commander-chief, i.e. the president, a former navy, a president who steals a phone of a journalist and no consequence. A phone recording how this president says that that journalist is a gipsy ... (I cannot add the adjective, it is racism). Robbers in a drifting country, where there are people who live (?) with less than 1$ / day. mad Why these politicians choose to be borgs, instead feeding the freedom, the reason, the faith? Did they forget the communism? A rhetoric question.

God have mercy!

Forgive me...

The dark oak, screen walls, on either side of the sanctuary, provide a storage area for the music ministry...

Wow, I have been in a lot of churches where the "art" is not what I would have chosen. This one is just not a place that I would feel at home in. It is a bit too weird. I actually think the "art" would be distracting from the Mass.

I actually liked the statute of the Mother of God and the explanation that through the hole where her womb would be one could see the altar. Of course, since the tabernacle is not on the altar, that symbolism loses its meaning when Mass is not being said. The fact that she's faceless doesn't bother me. Recall that a lot of people have trouble with the two-dimensionality of icons.

The stained glass window of Christ isn't bad either.

Other than that, the entire building reminded me of a concentration camp or perhaps the architecture found in Eastern Europe under the Communist regime. All that poured concrete is cold, cold, cold! They really should have listened to the architect and at least faced it with limestone. That would have helped somewhat. In an effort to reflect the power and majesty of God the building actually has the effect of distancing the person from God rather than drawing them closer.

Sophia,

And yet, where have you ever heard of venerating a faceless icon?

She looks like a Muslim...

[Linked Image]

It also reminds me of the faceless Christ in Jack Chick tracts...

The face reveals the person. A faceless icon of the Theotokos is NOT revelation, it is sacrilege as far as I'm concerned.

This quote says it all...

Quote
The architect, Marcel Breuer once wrote:

Colors which you can hear with ears;
Sounds to see with your eyes;
The void you can touch with your elbows;
The taste of space on your tongue;
The fragrance of dimensions;
the juice of stone.

This all sounds so painful to experience, much like this man's deluded sense of church architecture.

But, Gordo, it's not an icon and it's not supposed to be. It's a sculpture, and the fact that it doesn't have a face is designed to make one focus not on her but on her Son.

As to the architect's quote, sounds like he went on an LSD trip and didn't come back! grin

LSD is so 70's! Well, so is his architecture!

I disagree as to whether it is intended to be an icon or not.

It is clearly the representation of the Theotokos for this particular church. Icons can certainly be three dimensional - in other words, icons can be statues.

The problem is that the image purports to be sacred art, when in fact it is just bad religious art. I think the sculptor was attempting to steal a concept from Salvador Dali, but neglected to leave behind his strange Freudian phase!

Note the difference between Dali's beautiful religious art and this monstrosity!
