To view sex as a function is limiting, it is much more. I will summarize a part of the first book in Theology of the Body. The first book focuses on the experience of man during the time before original sin. John Paul II speaks of the "hermeneutics of the gift". I won't attempt to define what was meant with this phrase, but I will quote from the text which I think expands on the idea: The human body, with its sex, and its masculinity and femininity seen in the very mystery of creation, is not only a source of fruitfulness and procreation, as in the whole natural order. It includes right from the beginning the nuptial attribute, that is, the capacity of expressing love, that love in which the person becomes a gift and - by means of this gift - fulfills the meaning of his being and existence. Let us recall here the text of the last Council which declared that man is the only creature in the visible world that God willed "for its own sake." It then added that man "can fully discover his true self only in a sincere giving of himself" (GS 24). http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/j.../documents/hf_jp-ii_aud_19800116_en.htmlSex is not dirty or vile when a couple is grounded in love in marriage. If any of those two are missing it becomes base.

Great! So what you are saying is that its ok for a married Roman Catholic couple to use condoms if they receive a blessing from their spiritual father?

If my spiritual father gave such a blessing I would seek wiser council.
I have already stated a short argument against condoms. Do you want me to expand on why I oppose their use?

I love how this has gotten off topic. I think the main thing is that celebreties think that since they are famous their opinion has more weight than the opinion of an "average joe". I love entertainment, movies and television but I really hate it when celebs use their star power. However, sometimes I think it can be a good thing when celebs use their star power in a positive way like for charities and things like that. I guess I might seem hypocritcal but I think there is a difference between using star power in a positive way and abusing it to make the celeb's opinion seem more inportant.

This thread is going a bit off topic.
There have been threads before about the different approaches in the Catholic and Orthodox church regarding marital contraception.
These threads have never accomplished anything, but each side judging the other, and each side being unwilling to understand the other.
I will lock this thread for going off topic. You can start another thread about this subject if you so wish, but I warn that if it disintegrates into disrespectful discourse by either 'side', as this subject has in the past, it too will be closed.
