Archbishop admitted to the hospital with symptoms of gastroenteritis

The head of the Church of Greece, Archbishop Christodoulos, was admitted to a hospital in Athens on Saturday after suffering from symptoms of gastroenteritis. The archbishop had a high temperature and complained of stomach problems before being taken to the Aretaion Hospital. Doctors said Christodoulos would be kept in the hospital for the next few days for observation. The archbishop was forced to cancel a trip to Egypt. Religion and Education Minister Marietta Giannakou and Health Minister Dimitris Avramopoulosvisited Christodoulos in the hospital. Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis also called the archbishop to check up on his condition.

Apparently, the most recent news from Greece says that they will operate on him for 'twisting of the intestine' (whatever that translates to)...I don't like the sound of that...Archbishop Christoudoulos is a most charismatic and inspiring prelate for the country...and he has made good strides of Christian friendship with the Pope JPII, and Pope Benedict. My prayers to St. Nektarios of Aegina for intercessions on behalf of his health.

"Twisting of the intestines" does happen and it can be quite nasty. Our prayers for Archbishop Christodoulos are needed.

This might be what they are referring to. My prayers are with him! May the Lord guide his physicians in precision, wisdom, and skill and may he recover quickly and fully.

Volvulus: Abnormal twisting of the intestine which can impair the blood flow to the intestine. Volvulus can lead to gangrene and death of that segment of the gastrointestinal tract, intestinal obstruction, perforation of the intestine, and peritonitis. The stomach, small intestine, cecum, and sigmoid colon are all subject to volvulus. Malrotation of the bowel during fetal development can predispose to a volvulus.

Volvulus often has a sudden onset. The symptoms and signs may include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and blood in the stool. The treatment is surgery to free the obstruction and ensure normal blood flow to the bowel. Volvulus is a surgical emergency.

Volvulus is the Latin word for rolled up or twisted and is derived from the verb volvere, meaning to roll or turn about.

Volvulus occurs most frequently in middle-aged and elderly men.

Christodoulos to undergo routine surgery on intestine today

The director of the Aretaion Hospital in Athens, Christodoulos Stefanidis, said yesterday that Archbishop Christodoulos will undergo an operation at 7 a.m. today due to a narrowing of the intestinal tract. Christodoulos was admitted to the hospital on Saturday after complaining of symptoms of gastroenteritis. Stefanidis said that the archbishop will undergo a routine procedure that should last about three hours. The hospital director said that Christodoulos, who was visited by political and religious figures, was in good spirits.

Christodoulos undergoes successful operation for intestine problem

Archbishop Christodoulos, the head of the Church of Greece, remained in intensive care at the Aretaion Hospital in Athens yesterday after undergoing an operation on his intestine. Doctors said that the surgery had been a success and the archbishop was being kept in the intensive-care unit for precautionary reasons. Christodoulos was admitted to the hospital on Saturday and was diagnosed as suffering from a narrowing of the intestinal tract. Doctors said tests had also revealed that Christodoulos suffers from a chronic liver problem, which they are also trying to treat.

ARCHBISHOP RECOVERING

Christodoulos due to be moved out of intensive care today

Archbishop Christodoulos, the head of the Church of Greece, will remain in intensive care at the Aretaion Hospital in Athens for an extra day, doctors said yesterday. The hospitals director, Christodoulos Stefanidis, told Kathimerini that the archbishop was being kept in the intensive-care unit solely for precautionary reasons and is due to be moved to a regular room today. Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomaios, Christian Orthodoxys spiritual leader, is due to visit Christodoulos today. The archbishop underwent surgery for an intestinal problem on Tuesday. Stefanidis said that it is normal for patients who have undergone this procedure to stay in the hospital for at least eight days.

Bad news....although the newspapers are not saying so, my husband had lunch with our priest today, and he said that word has it that the Archbishop has cancer which has spread to his liver.
