For those always on the lookout for "innovations" made by the Roman Church, read on to Section V, paragraph 61:

http://212.77.1.245/news_services/bulletin/news/20451.php?index=20451&lang=en#V.%20The%20Christian%20virtue%20of%20drivers%20and%20their%20“Ten%20Commandments”

For once, I got your attention! biggrin

So is this a joke or a serious document? Is this one of those things like the lost question from the Summa Theologica, "Is God water?" I see there is a pastoral document on tourism as well? Please tell me that these are jokes. crazy laugh

I'm sorry, the question is, "Is God made of soap?" I shall post this in the town forum.

It's not a joke - or at least I don't think it is .

If you scroll to the top of the Page so kindly provided by Amado - it looks exactly the same as every document put out by the Vatican - that sort of brownish background.

The Format is the same as other Documents I have read in the past

Oh dear. Well, I certainly see the importance of extending kindness to the homeless and driving safely on the road. But, does this kind of thing merit an extended theological treatise on "journeying?" Sorry, I'm being disrespecful to the Vatican I suppose. I just can't see giving safe driving the same kind of treatment that you give the purpose of sexuality in marriage. The latter certainly merits extensive theological reflection and counsel. The first is just common sense.

Here are the Ten, but none of them involve soap of any kind:

Quote
Rome's 10 Commandments for the Road

1. You shall not kill.

2. The road shall be for you a means of communion between people and not of mortal harm.

3. Courtesy, uprightness and prudence will help you deal with unforeseen events.

4. Be charitable and help your neighbor in need, especially victims of accidents.

5. Cars shall not be for you an expression of power and domination, and an occasion of sin.

6. Charitably convince the young and not so young not to drive when they are not in a fitting condition to do so.

7. Support the families of accident victims.

8. Bring guilty motorists and their victims together, at the appropriate time, so that they can undergo the liberating experience of forgiveness.

9. On the road, protect the more vulnerable party.

10. Feel responsible toward others.

11. Do not run over tramps. grin

12. It's nice to be nice to the nice. (Frank Burns of M*A*S*H - Sophia!)

I recall reading a book by Catherine Doherty that talked about the place of charity in driving - bringing God into every moment of our lives. These "commandments" are not completely unfounded, since driving is a large part of modern life and charity does not end when we turn the keys.

Well, for some of us. grin

God bless,

The is not a joke! blush

It is a serious document about providing for the spiritual needs of itinerant and migrant people and others in their situation.

The Catholic Church has been ministering to these people since time immemorial but this is the first integrated official document to be issued on their behalf.

You missed the humor if you have not read the new set of the "Ten Commandments" for drivers under Section V, paragraph 61!

The document was issued by the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itenerant People (a dicastery of the Roman Curia) presided over by Renato Raffaele Cardinal Martino.

Read it before critiquing.

Yes, I read the new Ten commandments. That is why I thought it was a joke. crazy

On a serious note, taking care of the needs of itinerrant peoples and migrants is very important. I guess it was just all the theological waxing on driving as a way of "being in relation with others," and so forth that seemed a little over the top for me. But, the problem is probably with me, not with the document. At least I think. confused I probably shouldn't have said anything. Forgive me if I've offended.

Okay, I probably shouldn't mention this, but I can't resist:

III. Courtesy, uprightness and prudence will help you deal with unforeseen events.

Haven't I read this on a fortune cookie?

Okay, I'll stop now.

Here's a few more:

13. If you are old, turn off your signal light if you do not intend to turn.

14. Slow traffic should move to the right lane...or buy a bicycle and get off the hiway.

15. Your car is not a portable telephone booth. As my bus driver in preschool used to say: Sit down, turn around and shut up!

16. If you are putting on make-up and eating breakfast while driving, your life is too busy.

Any others?

You could have, and it shows the convergence of the two age-old wisdom of Confucianism and Catholicism! biggrin

Don't stop now because you'll derail the discussion. wink

I know, but I'm just feeling guilty blush I guess though that I needed to see this. I feel like at any moment I could burst out laughing and not stop for 15 minutes.

I witnessed this clearly last week on my way to work!

I rolled down my window while traffic was stopped and shouted to her pointing: "Ma'am, you missed one eyelash on your left eye!"

When she started opening her window, I stepped on my accelerator and VRRROOOMMM! away I went. Boy, was I crazy that morning! biggrin
