Dear Orest,

I found this update today. I am hoping that what my husband heard yesterday was speculation or that if it was not, that miraculously, the biopsies that were sent out to these prestigious European labs, will come back negative. He is one of the most beloved hierarchs Greece ever had, he has nerve to speak out on what he believes, he is contemporary and understands the modern world and all its social complexities, he has great charisma and a loving demeanor, and he made great strides of forgiveness and friendship with the Popes. There is still much work to be done in Christ's vineyard, and let's pray that God will allow him this time. I especially pray for the intercessions of St. Nektarios of Aegina, the Wonderworker and divine healer, especially of cancer, to intercede for the Archbishop....

Archbishop test results awaited

Archbishop Christodoulos issued a statement yesterday thanking people for the love and support they have offered him as he continues to be treated in the intensive-care unit at the Aretaion Hospital in Athens.

With the help of the doctors and, above all, God I hope to be able to soon embrace each of you, Christodouloss statement read.

The head of the Church of Greece underwent surgery for an intestinal problem last week but doctors also discovered a problem with his liver and are awaiting the results of tests, including a biopsy, today. Samples of the archbishops liver and intestine have been sent to laboratories in London, Paris and Miami for the tests.

President Karolos Papoulias visited the archbishop yesterday but said he felt too emotional to make any comments to journalists when he left the hospital.

Maybe we should stop speculating on a diagnosis until there is confirmed information as to the results of these tests.

Prayers for the Archbishop continue

It was not a speculation. It came directly and personally from my priest yesterday who is closely associated with clerics from the church of Greece.

Alice - I really don't like to argue here

BUT

Until the test results are back then any diagnosis is provisional as any good Doctor will tell you.

If it were you would you honestly want everyone talking about your possible diagnosis before you knew it for certain ?

Just to clarify this back and forth, the following has been released as of today. News Release [iht.com]

I think instead of questioning sometimes the sources, we should instead be focusing on prayers for His Beatitude's behalf.

Having just arrived home from a vacation that included time in Athens and Rome, I was pleased to hear that +Christodoulos appears to be recovering nicely.

Kathimerini printed an excerpt of the Archbishops first written address to the faithful after his surgery:

With the help of the doctors and above all, of God, who called upon me to serve the Church with my entire being, I pray that I may soon embrace you all once more, and each of you in turn. I thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for the love and support they have shown me, above all for their prayers to the Lord. It is a balm to my soul, particularly at this difficult time. They give me strength. (June 23, 2007)

My wife and I had originally read in the June 12 English edition of Kathimerini about the hospitalization of Archbishop Christodoulos. We were in an outdoor caf in the Plaka area of Athens, so we had the opportunity to walk to the Metropolitan Cathedral and offer a prayer on the Archbishops behalf.

Dear Deacon John,

As I am sure you realized while you were in Athens, that the Archbishop is quite beloved there. I hope and pray that he will be able to serve the Lord and the Church of Greece in good health for many, many more years!

Send me a p.m. if you wish and share with me your impressions of your trips to Athens and Rome, or even better, if you have time, please share some of the highlights of the trip on Town Hall!

In Christ,
Alice

P.S. I hope that you missed the great heatwave in Athens of the past week--the greatest one since 1987, when we had the 'luck' of baptizing our daughter there! shocked (atleast now, twenty years later, air conditioning is widespread) smile

Christodoulos is on the mend

The health of Archbishop Christodoulos is improving rapidly and the head of the Church of Greece could leave the hospital by the end of the week, close aides told Sundays Kathimerini.

According to those close to the archbishop, Christodoulos has already taken on some of his religious duties again and is well enough to get out of bed for several hours each day.

However, the archbishop is said to be upset by the speculation within the Church, as well as by lay people, about who might succeed him if he dies.

Doctors removed a tumor from Christodouloss intestine earlier this month but he is also suffering from hepatoma, a cancer that originates in the liver.

Aides said that no decision has yet been reached as to whether the archbishop will be treated abroad.

I have just read this today about the Archbishop.

Quote
The Greek television news is reporting today that Archbishop Christodoulos of Athens, suffering from liver and colon cancer, was visited by the distinguished transplant surgeon, Andreas Tzakis of the
University of Miami.

http://www.diabetesresearch.org/AbouttheDRI/DRIFaculty/AndreasTzakis.htm

Dr. Tzakis, a personal frind of the Archbishop, is proposing a liver transplant as the definitive treatment. This would take place in Miami, after (a) the Archbishop's cancer is stabilized through chemotherapy, and (b) a suitable donor organ is found. It is expected that these steps would take some months.

We must all continue to keep him in our prayers.

Greece's church leader to undergo liver transplant in US

Athens (dpa) - Greece's Orthodox church leader Archbishop
Christodoulos will undergo a liver transplant in the United States after being diagnosed with cancer, doctors said Thursday.

The church leader, who has been hospitalised in Athens for more than a month, was likely to be transferred to the University of Miami School of Medicine in Florida for surgery after August 15.

Christodoulos was examined by Greek-American surgeon Andreas Tzakis, who is based in Florida. The decision was made after Tzakis met Greek doctors and German specialists treating the archbishop.
