Why do I watch TV? Laziness. Entertainment. It's there, and it's passive, and it's easier than reading, being active, etc. It's also a legal drug to stupefy my mind. I watch the news, the Science channel, the Military channel, A&E, the Travel Channel (yay, Anthony Bourdain!). But I'm toying with the idea of getting rid of cable tv. It would save a lot of money, and it would force me not to waste so much time.

John, if you get rid of cable, get ready for the infomercials. You'll learn how to have better skin, invest (aka lose) your money in myriad ways, how to torture your body with machines that the Inquisition would have hesitated to design, and discover the joys of juicing! Yum! Yum!

Marian, I disposed of my TV while still single and haven't owned one since before I was married (almost 20 years ago). That was an agreement my wife and I made while courting, and we have stuck to that one, at least. My kids have grown up without one, and have read good books while pre-teens and teens that I didn't read until college. We play music together, work outside, read, etc. and have really never missed it. It has taught us how to converse and be closer as a family. We do use the computer to watch DVDs (All Creatures Great and Small, Brother Cadfael, good movies, etc.) maybe a couple of times a week in the evenings.
I couldn't think of many more dark influences on our society than the scandals, sins and gratuitous violence that are portrayed hourly.

PS Kobraz, I agree; though Pravda is perhaps not the eye opener you want! That depends which one you have in mind: Komsomolskaia or Ukrainska?

For me, it fills the quiet lonely hours after the boys are in bed. I'm either watching CSI/L&O/Greys or surfing the net. Ugh. What a wretched life

Marian,
Since you started this thread, I think it is time that you join in! Why do you watch t.v., and what do you watch?

I used to watch TV a lot in the past time, laziness of my mind and soul, poor prayer.
Now I watch only important news, rather I hear them, and very seldom a movie. Documentaries only on topics as: monastic life, mathematics, cosmology.
It is terrible this akedia which comes so often. I feel that it is a great sin this lost time.
Well...just a thought.

Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside a dog it's too dark to read. Groucho Marx
I'm beginning to detect some Marxist leanings in this thread.

I don't watch TV. I do not have one, nor have I ever owned one ... I might like to see a "Star Trek: next generation" or "Twilight Zone" (the old black and white shows) if I happen to be at someone's home who has a TV or if I am at a relative's home I might watch a cooking show. But it's actually been quite some time since I've even done that. I think I watched that "It's a Wonderful Life" many times many years ago. Indeed, it has been so long since I have watched TV at all that I have heard how bad it is but haven't seen how bad it is. CS
