Diak,

Thank you for the 'cool' news.

I love wooden architecture and thought the temple pics most excellent. Such a structure would be neat for a small parish, no?

Is the third pic the photo of the local parishioners?

Do you know of any other websites with other pics, especially close-ups? or interior? Just wondering.

Joe

"Russians to Build First Antarctic Orthodox Church."

By Jeroen Franois
14 February 2002

Russians in a remote part of Siberia are selecting logs for a chapel which they will build, disassemble and then ship to Antarctica, the first Orthodox church on the barren continent. Interfax news agency said a priest named Father Georgy, a 20-year veteran polar explorer, would preside over the chapel, to be built from a specially selected variety of cedar in the mountainous Altai region of Siberia.

And here is another article on the first Orthodox church in the "Deep" South:

First Orthodox church in Antarctica

Bishop Feognost of Sergiyev Posad, the head of the Troitse-Sergiyeva Lavra (one of the main Orthodox shrines in the Moscow region) consecrated in the name of the St. Trinity the first Orthodox church in Antarctica built at Russian polar station Bellinsgauzen.

Patriarch's representation (Podvorye) of the Troitse-Sergiyeva Lavra was established by the polar church, the Orthodox Encyclopedia research center of the Moscow Patriarchy told RIA Novosti on Monday.

The consecration ceremony of the unique church gathered a lot of Russian and foreign polar explorers and pilgrims, who were delivered to Bellinsgausen station by a special flight.

The church can seat up to 30 believers. It was built of cedar and larch, the most cold and wind-resistant wood, in the Altai territory (South Siberia). After that, the church was dismantled and transported to Antarctica. Here it was assembled again.

Palekh's painters created icons for the new church and bells were ordered by offsprings of well-known Russian Decembrist Muravyov-Apostol.

The site of the first Antarctic church was chosen so that it was seen from the distance of 30 kilometers. Now the St. Trinity church is the first thing, which is seen by passengers, coming to Antarctica from Tierra del Fuego, said the Orthodox Encyclopedia research center.

God bless the ROC for establishing a mission in Antarctica.

Let the evangelization begin!

And some thought it would be a "cold day" before this would happen . . .

Joe, there are dozens of wooden churches on the net. I made a CD with over 100 pics, interior and mostly exterior I have found in various places.

One of my all-time favorites is the church in Kizi: http://home.onego.ru/kirch/kizi1.jpg

And another recently constructed, simple and beautiful log church:

There are many of these gems out there, including St. Elias: www.saintelias.com [saintelias.com]

Indeed He is Risen!

That is an interesting idea, Gordo. I haven't really thought in those terms. I have always had a very special fondness for wooden churches, especially log construction, as masterpieces of the ingenuity and tenacity of faith of those who construct them, outposts of the Gospel in the wilderness, beacons in the woods.

Every priest of the Moscow Patriarchate must be very, very careful in all he does lest he annoy his bishop and be assigned to minister in this lovely little church! wink

So what do they do on the 'Feast of Jordan' ?
Clearly, nobody in that parish is going to be impressed with an iced shaped cross.
Do they melt ice and put it into a cross shaped pan ?

I love this one. Its structure is so ... so ... together! And how these log temples actually survive the harshest of winters for centuries.
