Ah, the good old days!!! Actually, these clips give a good glimpse at Old Rite practices of Old Russia. Pay attention to the vestments and Mitres.

It's a pity that Eisenstein could have done so much more if Stalin wasn't breathing down his neck.

I can't find the church sequence, but here is the end of the Hutsul Wedding of Ivan and Marichka fom "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors" (Tini zabutykh predkiv). A typical Carpathian
wedding, you can even hear the wedding party sing what sounds like the music to the "Moleben to Jesus Lover of Mankind" (Oj Isuse...)!

I didn't know Hutsuls hand the word "fajno"(fine, good) in their Carpathian dialect!

I'm still looking for a DVD version of "Shadows". Anybody know if it is available on DVD?

Sergei Parajanov's "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors" has not been released on DVD.

But you might be able to track down a used VHS copy at Amazon [amazon.com] or eBay.

I believe that "faino" originates in German, or perhaps in Yiddish.

Russian has "Faina" (pronounced in three syllables) as a woman's first name.

Back to Ivan the Terrible - it's enjoyable but not authentic, Not particularly surprising. I must attempt to locate the text of the Coronation service.

The coronation service is in Hapgood - I just discovered to my delight, but alas it's for the Russian Emperor, not the Byzantine.

I must go track down the Byzantine coronation service and compare it with the Russian sometime (or even the Bulgarian and Serbian too)....

The music for the Panachida for Ivan at the end of the film sounds like the Subcarpathian melody for "So duchi pravednymi"!

Your wish is my command, my Brother. I have transposed the video to NTSC DVD, and will gladly send you a copy if you provide me an address. Of course, I changed the language to Russian (Kidding! smile )

It is an interesting movie indeed. It probably was only seen by the members of the Soviet Academy of Arts when it was made in 1964. Very interesting movie showing the many superstitions of the Eastern Slavs of the Carpathians!

There's no question about it being propaganda. Have you seen many of the anti-clerical propaganda posters?

Oleksa,

I bought the "Shadows" dvd from Ebay. It is released by petrovka.ua and very high quality. It is in the PAL format so it only plays on computer dvd drives and not western hemisphere brand dvd players. You can even select to have a "Great Russian" language over dubbing narration. I prefer to listen to the Hutsul dialect. Well worth the $20.33.
