I believe that it was the commission "Ecclesia Dei" which clarified the point that "Instituted Acolytes" may serve in the capacity of Subdeacon at a Solemn High of the Extraordinary Form. He would not wear the maniple. Most acolytes in theis country are students preparing for the priesthood or diaconate.
However -
It is to my knowledge that only one diocese, Lincoln, Nebraska, will institute well-prepared laymen to be acolytes in order to help with distribution of Holy Communion during Masses, thus avoiding Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (their proper title).
The ministry of Acolyte may, according to the legislation of local Bishops' conferences, be called that of the "Subdiaconate". This is in the norms found in the Motu Proprio Ministeria Quaedam. The ministries of Lector and Acolyte were inherent in the Minor Order of the Subdiaconate.
