This is to announce a conference in 2006 to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Boksaj/Makinich edition of the Prostopinije. I do not have the dates yet but the contact person for information is Vladislav Ihnatyshyn. His e-mail address is v.ihnatyshyn@libero.it .

The conference will address the history, development and contemporary usage of the Carpatho-Rusin Prostopinije (Liturgical Chant).

Glory to Jesus Christ!

The dates of the conference are June 26 and 27, 2006, which will take place at the Bl. Theodore Romzha Theological Academy in Uzhorod, Ukraine. It is titled: "International Academic Conference
on the Occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the
Printing of the Prostopinije by Fr. Emilian Bokshay." According to the notice I received, "the theme of the conference will be 'the Liturgical Plain Chant of the Eparchy of Mukachevo, its history, development, special character, analytic reflection, and contemporary usage."

This information came from Fr. John Zeyack, the Passaic presbyter who is currently teaching at the Theological Academy in Uzhorod.

It is good to know that our fellow Rusyn Greek Catholics in the Uzhorod-Mukachevo Eparchy are celebrating this important milestone for Subcarpathian-Rus' Prostopinije. Hopefully they will publish an updated "Bokshai" collection of Prostopinije, as we here in America are always in need of good examples of authentic Rusyn Prostopinije! Axios!

Administrator,

Do you know anything more about the conference? I guess all the talks will be in Ukrainian? Do you know who the speakers will be?

Press Release: Uzhorod

Conference on Plain Chant Blessed Theodore Romzha

Greek Catholic Theological Academy

Of Uzhorod

June 25-26-27, 2006

International Academic Conference

On the occasion of the

100th Anniversary of the First Printing of the

PROSTOPINIJE

By Rev. Fr. John Bokshay

Bishop Milan Shashik, apostolic administrator of the Mukachevo Eparchy, has announced the speakers and program of the Conference dedicated to the topic of the prostopinije, the liturgical plain chant of the Mukachevo Eparchy and the churches originating from the Eparchy of Mukachevo beginning with a Moleben to the Holy Spirit at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Uzhorod, Ukraine on Sunday, June 25th at 7:30 pm. Bishop Milan will welcome participants from the Eparchies of Mukachevo, Presov and Kosice in Slovakia, Hajdudorog in Hungary, Krisevtsi in Croatia, Ruski Kerestur in Serbia as well as from the Ruthenian Eparchies of the United States and the Slovak Eparchy in Canada. Letters of invitation have been sent to all the Eparchies which have their roots in the Eparchy of Mukachevo.

Speakers from the Oriental Institute in Rome, Slovakia, Hungary, the United States, Serbia, and from the Eparchy of Mukachevo will reflect of the themes of the Plain Chant Tradition of Mukachevo addressed from different perspectives. Different language uses of the plain chant tradition will be offered by seminarians from Presov in Slovakia, Nyiregyhaza in Hungary and Uzhorod. A short film showing the chant at the various pilgrimages will be shown. Ecumenical perspectives will be shared by two Orthodox Archbishops from the United States.

The conference languages are Ukrainian and English. A book of the Proceedings of the Conference will be published in Ukrainian and English.

"The spiritual heritage we have received through the plain chant tradition of our Greek Catholic Church is our united and common voice in praise and thanksgiving in the liturgical services of our Church. Our liturgical plain chant tradition identifies us, unites us, and distinguishes us as one Church in the Byzantine Tradition. The testimony of this common usage is an important reason to celebrate together the 100th anniversary of the first printing of the Prostopinije" explained Fr. Taras Lovska, Rector of the Blessed Theodore Romzha Theological Academy which is hosting this Conference. "The common plain chant of our Greek Catholic Church is a uniting and life giving heritage that we have received."

Anyone interested in further details or attending is asked to write to: Prostopinije Conference, Blessed Theodore Romzha Theological Academy, Patrusa Karpatskoho 2A, Minaj, Uzhorod Rajon, Ukraine 89424 or email at:

This sounds like a wonderful conference. Will parts of it be taped and put up on the web for the rest of the world to view? Alas, I cannot afford to travel for this, but would very much like to hear many of the discussions.

In Christ,

Michael

Having just recently arrived in the USA from the conference in Uzhorod, I can personally say this much: It was definitely worthwhile!!!

The technical parts of the conference, lectures and discussion only tell part of the picture. Interacting with cantors, liturgists, and priests from around the Eparchies (in US,Canada, Slovakia, Ukraine)was enlightening.

At the conference, the debate regarding translation (English/Ukrainian/Slovak, etc) was at least more civil than the discussion here on byzcath. I hesitated to post this, since it seems any post on our church's music causes so much contentios debate.

I have to agree with Steve. The conference was really very good. There were a promise to repeat it after (every) two years.

It was not only very useful for cantors and musicologists but even for other people. I saw (and hope the other participants too) how we need a collaboration, more contacts, more space for meeting among eastern catholic churches.

As I wrote a short report for our church magazine, I noticed that there were 6 greek catholic bishops and 3 orthodox bishops present. The ecumenical atmosphere was really astonishing. So it is not always true that greek catholics and orthodox are not able to establish normal relations and that the eastern catholics are the vexed issue of ecumenism.

Has anyone posted pictures from the conference on internet?

Andreios,

I just got of the phone with someone that has an interest in the conference presentations. He noted that a number of the presentations also had an English translation of the papers presented that were printed. Will they be offered online or in printed form for sale?
