"...peasants tables are often so arranged that it is impossible to sit with ones back to it; the table is jammed up into the Ikon corner so that it appears as if the Ikons themselves are sitting down to the meals. Before eating, one bows to the Ikon and crosses oneself three times and one repeats the ritual after the meal."

Thank you so much, Miller, for posting this article!! It was a beautiful window into Orthodox Russian life. I love how the various customs draw every person into God's Presence.

Also, I had never actually seen the scarf over the icons before, although I have read about that.

Thanks again for posting!!

You are welcome, the towel around the icon is a rushnyk. It is common in every Ukrainian & sometimes Russian homes. IT can be embrodiered which is common in Ukraine or finely woven.
In Northern Russia I have seen rushnyks of "red picking". This type of weaving is also popular in Scadinavia. It is a white background in linen with the design woven in a very bright red.

Does anyone have a good method in writing for making icons w/ decoupage.. Is that even correct? I'm looking for way to take printed Photo's and put then on wood.
