Code
PORTSMOUTH, UK: Traditional Anglican Communion Seeks Full Union With Rome

Statement authorized by the TAC Primate

16th October 2007

"The College of Bishops of the Traditional Anglican Communion (TAC) met in Plenary Session in Portsmouth, England, in the first week of October 2007. The Bishops and Vicars-General unanimously agreed to the text of a letter to the See of Rome seeking full, corporate, sacramental union. The letter was signed solemnly by all the College and en-trusted to the Primate and two bishops chosen by the College to be presented to the Holy See.

The letter was cordially received at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The Primate of the TAC has agreed that no member of the College will give interviews until the Holy See has considered the letter and responded."

What is the difference between the TAC and the Anglican Catholic Church?

The American wing of TAC is the Anglican Church in America (ACA) (website [acahome.org]). The Anglican Catholic Church (ACC) (website [anglicancatholic.org]) came out of the original continuing movement 30 years ago, beginning with the Affirmation of St. Louis, along with the Anglican Province of Christ the King (APCK). The ACA splintered from the ACC and also has lines of succession from the Polish National Catholic Church. (ACA and PNCC churches will refer their members to one another when traveling.)

The differences? The ACC (Original Province) is actually more High Church than the ACA, which had a broad churchmanship most of its history. I think all ACC parishes use the Anglican Missal. In the ACA, missal use is less common, with some churches using the straight '28 BCP and a high number of parish hybrids; I know at least one ACA parish uses the Novus Ordo Mass. Not all ACA members are on board with talk of corporate union with Rome, and some have already jumped ship as a result. I think TAC has a much larger membership than members of ACC, mostly due to member affiliates overseas.

That's essentially it. There are many good people in both communions. Hope that helps.

So does the Anglican Catholic Church have full Apostolic Succession and are its Sacraments considered to be valid in the Orthodox and Eastern Catholic communions?

Others may disagree, but Orthodoxy doesn't have the same outlook on the matter of "validity" and succession. No Orthodox would ever go anywhere outside Orthodoxy, regardless if that church has a line of historical/tactile succession from the apostles or not; doing so brings a self-inflicted excommunication.

Rome, of course, has decreed Anglicanism is devoid of apostolic succession, which is why the ACA went to the PNCC for some of its lines.

I have been advised by someone who is "in the know" that the TAC dialogue with Rome is a one way conversation. IOW, there really are not any official conversations going on at this point.

It would be good if there were...

As I understand it, the relationship has been unofficial until this time. With this formal appeal for reunification, the hope is that Rome will now engage a dialogue toward union. As a general principle, once a formal request is made not just for ecumenical relations but talks for reunion, Rome has a duty to engage.

Finally some good news! I am glad that the Anglicans are taking the initiative to move in the right direction.

If TAC really want to return to the true faith and tradition, they should seek full communion with Holy Orthodox Church.
The good side in becoming roman catholic is that they get closer to us.

Krsto: Is there a point to that comment beyond irking Catholics? Not sure how what you said added to the conversation.
