Alice,
I take it you live in Westchester? I lived in Greenwich, CT, until recently, and I noticed over a number of years that a species of black squirrel had appeared. It was probably some sort of genetic variant of the grey species, since they seemed to "hang out" with the greys without concern. Dear Michael, I live in Westchester-- very close to Greenwich, so yes, I know of those black squirrels. The first time I ever saw them was in Larchmont a few years back. Now, I also see one from time to time in my town living harmoniously with the greys. Flying squirrels?!? How common are they? Alice Well, as it happens, my brother John who lives with my mother and takes care of her, refused to believe my guess that the critter was a flying squirrel, so we googled it: Google "Flying Squirrels" [ google.com] After studying the pix, he accepted the ID. One of the pages described the habitat as right across the Midwest and East in a swath at about the latitude of NY, Chicago, St. Louis, etc. They are apparently much more common in the Midwest, but I guess they too are finding their ecological niche widening (along with the Turkey buzzard which has migrated up here from the South!). Michael
