LOL. I'm torn between Cardinal Ratzinger and Cardinal Schoenborn. I can't find any information to substantiate the claims that the latter is a flaming liberal, and he seems like he'd be great force that could help bring about East-West unity. And he's Dominican! But... Cardinal Ratzinger is...Cardinal Ratzinger! Arrrgh!

I was alarmed to see that eight people had voted for Cardinal Mahony. Perhaps a most suitable name for him would be "Pope Ignoramus I."

Quite interesting that His Eminence Major Archbishop Varkay Vithayathil, CSSR, of the Syro-Malabar Church is leading the voting.

I would suggest though that name-calling of hierarchs is inappropriate in this Forum.

Strangest argument I've heard yet is that if Cardinal Lustiger (who had a Jewish mother) is elected Pope, it will be viewed as an antagonistic move by the Jewish community ???

So let's see. If Lustiger is elected, Jews will be offended. If Ratzinger is elected, liberals will be offended. If Arinze is elected, homosexuals will be offended.

I've always found it difficult to please everyone and have adopted the philosophy that everyone should be treated fairly. Therefore.... upset everyone! Then there is no opportunity for someone to cry "favouritism!". biggrin

Does anyone have any information about Cardinal Hummes, O.F.M. (First name is Claudio)? because I don't. I know that he is from Brazil and South America where there are more Catholics than anywhere in the world. Also he is younger.(70) than some of the others. The poll lists him as one of the first ten and he has been mentioned by the press as a possible choice.

I think the reason Cardinal Ratzinger leads in an online poll as the one listed here is because his name is better known than the others. Also maybe because he gave the homily and is the prefect? of the college of cardinals and was close to the Holy Father. His writings and actions these past years have drawn public attention as well. He is a very important person in the Vatican. I liked his Lenten meditations this year which were published online.

However, he is older (nearing 80) so may not be their final choice, unless the possibility of having to elect someone else again in a few years is not an issue. The choice could be a complete surprise as was when Pope John Paul II was elected after 400 years of Italian Popes. We shall see how the Holy Spirit leads them...

Just a few thoughts.... smile

Blessings,

Mary Jo

Here is the latest as of 10:45 am today EST.

RATZINGER Joseph 12.68 % (722)
LUSTIGER Jean-Marie 11.83 % (674)
VITHAYATHIL Varkey, C.SS.R. 11.82 % (673)

its definetely a close race... we should have an exit poll.

How could I forget. If Cardinal Husar is elected, the Russian army goes on full alert.

Here's info on Cardinal Hummes of Brazil http://www.wkrn.com/Global/story.asp?S=3176039

You can't please all of the people, all of the time! Which is not an issue in a Papal election anyway.

I think the idea of a transitional Pope is a good one, coming on the heels of the extraordinary papacy of John Paul II of Blessed Memory. I think that if relatively young man such as Schonborn is elected, he may spend much of his pontificate being compared to his predecessor. This in turn may lead to a general disappointment where none is warranted. I myself think Ratzinger would be the best choice.

What I found most dissapointing was that eleven people have actually voted for Bernard Cardinal Law! confused

Lawrence,

Thanks for the URL. From that article it looks like Claudio Cardinal Hummes, O.F.M. has been fairly conservative in doctrinal matters but very progressive in other matters particularly in Brazil.

I appreciate the information.

Mahony? Is outrage! Was it Mahony in 19th century Russia? Was it Cardinals in land of holy Patriarchs? It was not! He be turning church of Peter into architectural nightmare. Is outrage! wink
