Mary Jo I think by far the best candidate from Latin America is Cardinal Nicolas DeJesus Lopez Rodriguez of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. Here's some info on him http://www.hardbeatnews.com/newsdetails.php?aaad=3588 Sounds promising to me.

I have less and less interest on who it is, the American Bishops do not listen anyway, and Rome says we must proceed slowly so there is less confusion, meanwhile nothing gets done except neutral verbal statements that carry nothing with them.
Sorry folks, I don't buy into it anymore.

Dear Friends, I was going to cast my vote. But then I remembered that I'm not (yet) a Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church! Alex

I am only really old enough to remember JP2.
JP2 seemed like one of us - only better - and even when he taught us difficult things to accept, I wanted so much to listen to him.
He seemed so human and accessible, which prior popes didn't seem. In the old pictures, they look so old and venerable and unapproachable. Everything about JP2 seemed to say "come to me - I want to tell you the Good News." God truly blessed him with a gift that he used to the fullest.
Although our loss is surely heaven's gain, I'm still rather selfishly not ready to let go of JP2 just yet.
I do hope the Cardinals take their time and open their hearts to receive the counsel of the Holy Spirit. I wouldn't even speculate on who the right or wrong man is, because I'm not in their shoes. When we see the white smoke, I guess we will know.
Even though JP2 is a tough act to follow, I think we should greet his successor with sincere joy and support. I'm sure that's what JP2 would want us to do.

Is the popes private secratery a cardinal. I keep thinking about him, he would make an excellent pope, after all he has learned from the master. ALSO, one does not have to be a cardinal to become pope. Otherwise I like Cardinal Arinze, but I really think that is slim and none. But then I know some excellent priests that would make wonderful popes. Off topic here: ByzTN Charles you have been listing to too many Monte Python movies humm or is it public education...you sound like my kids. Did you know that is a favorite pass time of teens today, quoting his Holy Grail movie. So strange, the carry on whole conversations like that. Go figure. Pani Rose

Rose, I don't know much about Monty Python since I haven't seen any of those films in many years. They do seem to have become popular with an entirely new and younger audience. The one I most hear quoted is, The Meaning of Life - I think that's the correct title. I do read the Onion Dome, however, and wouldn't miss it for anything. Fr. Vasiliy is the greatest, and would make a great pope, but he isn't Catholic. Hmmm, that could be said of many bishops, too, couldn't it?

I find the above comment offensive, outrageously rude, disrespectful, and bereft of Christian charity. FYI, Cardinal Lustiger is unable to speak. His vocal chords are damaged. Instead of making insulting comments about members of the College of Cardinals, I suggest that those who take the election of the next pope seriously should spend time in prayer to the Holy Spirit. Peace, Charles

Charles,
I live in the L.A. Diocese and Cardinal Mahony is the Bishop, although I refrain from using harsh words in public, I will admit to praying for the Holy Spirit to grant a loving attitude adjustment to the Cardinal.

james Good afternoon James. Have you ever met Cardinal Mahony? I have, and he is intelligent and interesting to speak with. It`s one thing to criticize someone regarding their attitude and/or public or private interactions - and your comment is very respectful of him - but it is quite another thing to hurl insults at someone who, whether one likes it or not, is a successor of the apostles. Frankly, if I had been publicly insulted the way he was by someone who has taken religious vows and professes to live a Christian life, I might just have a bit of an attitude. Actually, I know I`d have more than a bit of an attitude and I`d definitely be seeing my confessor because of it. Peace, Charles, who is far from perfect and is always in need of forgiveness

Gaudior, much amused HEHEHEHE I think bishops in general are selected in this country because they have similar qualities. They are good committee members, good consensus builders, good fund raisers, and they never speak ill of each other. In essence, they are good bureaucrats. I have never met Mahony, but am glad to hear that he is intelligent and interesting to speak with. He evidently is legendary in California for both good, and somewhat notorious reasons, depending on the source of information. But I am sure of one thing, that cathedral is ugly as sin! I understand they call it the Taj Mahony.
