Does anyone know if there is a graphic/image editing software package out there that is cheaper than Photoshop? I don't need a lot of bells and whistles - I just need to create solid PNG and JPEG files.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks...

Gordo - what's wrong with iPhoto ?

you could try

The Gimp [ though I think that needs you to download something called X11 from your install disks ]

There is also Graphic Converter

Mind you I have never used either of these - I stick to iPhoto

Gordo,

What is it that you are trying to do? Simple photo work can be done in the iLife '06 or '08 applications. If you are trying to do some advanced work flow you may actually need Aperture or PhotoShop Lightroom. If you are trying to create graphics then Illustrator. It would help if you clarified what your intent is.

Father Anthony and OLS,

Thanks for your post. I'm trying to take composites (?) of text and graphics that I create in Power Point (I find this the easiest tool for me...at least the most familiar) and use it to create PNG and JPEG files for uploading to the internet and printing. It would be great if I could use it to take actual images, clip art and photographs and manipulate them, but at this point it is not a necessity.

If you think the packages you mentioned would help with this, that would be great. But the pricetag of Photoshop looked a bit intimidating! Not to mention the fact that I am more than a bit of an amateur at this!

God bless,

Gordo,

I am sorry to say this but you will need to get at least Adobe PhotoShop Elements 4 for that task. It is a stripped down version of PhotoShop but should have the tools you are looking to use but at an eighth of the price.

Father and OLS,

Thank you both! It is certainly better than the $900 price tag I was looking at!

I'll ask at work on Monday. We use Macs almost exclusively where I work. And we do LOTS of photo stuff and graphics. I'll find out what programs we use and how much they are.

And it's nice to hear from another Mac user. Maybe we should use that as a topic for a forum? Or would it get even uglier than the RDL or some of the other forums and topics?

Just kidding!

Gordo,

Thinking back on what you intend to do, you might want to forget about the PowerPoint work and try to create it directly in Photoshop Elements. Adobe products are not known as being friendly towards importing any Microsoft products. I know when I work in Adobe InDesign CS3, I have to work importing text via copy and paste from Microsoft Word since it will not recognize the Microsoft file extension.

Father,

Thank you for the advice! I'm sure it is fairly straightforward to use, so I may just go with your suggestion.

Timbo, thanks for your offer as well! I agree - Macs rule, PC's drool!

Yes, at least the new Leopard OS is not buggy like a certain OS that was released by Microsoft earlier this year. At least it does not have folks screaming because they lost drivers and files or having to replace equipment because it does not like what you already have.

Gordo,

Try Graphiconverter... It may do the trick for you. It is a comprehensive image tool that we use in our Agency down here in chicago.

John,

Thanks very much! I will check that one out.

Father Anthony,

When you mentioned the difficulty with using text from Microsoft Office products, I assume you were not using the Text Art feature in MO. Most of what I am creating uses that feature. I'm just wondering if that might make a difference (for your work and mine).

Just a thought...
