Does a Bisernica sound anything like a Mandolin ? And how much do they cost ?
I've been playing Mandolin for almost 2 years now, and it's really gotten me interested in other stringed instruments. I've really been wanting a Bouzouki or Octave Mandolin next, and have seen them for around $500, but I'd gladly settle for a Cittern or Mandocello.

Lawrence,
A bisernica (a.k.a. prim) sounds similar to a mandolin but there are some differences. The mandolin has a larger fretboard and body, so the sound is a bit fuller than the bisernica. The mandolin is much more "twangy" than the bisernica, but then again, that is why its built that way.
Depending on the quality of bisernica you want, they price anywhere from $100+ for an American made bisernica and $350+ for a Croatian made bisernica. The Croatian bisernica has a much better sound and the craftsmanship is much better.

Smaller than the Mandolin ? Nothing's smaller than a Mandolin ! Just kidding. I'd love to hear one sometime. To me a Mandolin sounds amazing when played in a quiet house, so it's hard to imagine an instrument that sounds even softer.

I have a nice 12-sting guitar, but haven't tried playing it since the arthritis hit. No doubt the neighbors are grateful.

That only works with six string guitars.

I'd crawl on my knees to the closest Guitar Center for a Taylor 12 String.
I've got arthritis in both hands, but it hasen't effected my fingers at all. Several hours of Mandolin playing however, can sometimes give me a sharp pain below the palm of my left hand.

If you google tambura or bisernica or prim or tamburitzans, you'll find a lot of music that has tambure in it. http://www.katulic.com/

I used to have arthritis or something in my right thumb joint where it joins the hand (the first metacarpophalangeal joint) but Fr. Anointed me on the Holy Assumption and it never came back. Praise God! Maybe Fr. Serge and you should request an Anointing.
