Bishop +PETER of Cleveland and the Diocese of Mid-West, ROCOR,
will celebrate the Divine Liturgy on Dec. 9 at Saints Peter & Paul Church (OCA) in Manville, N.J., with the blessing of OCA Metropolitan +HERMAN. Bishop +PETER is "a longtime friend" of the parish's rector, Protopresbyter James Parsells, and godfather to one of Father Parsells' children.
It is believed that this will be the first time a ROCOR bishop has served in an OCA church since 1970, when the OCA was granted
autocephaly by the Patriarchate of Moscow.
During the Divine Liturgy, Bishop +PETER, with the blessing of
Metropolitan +HERMAN, will elevate OCA Deacon Paul Sokol to the rank of protodeacon. The honor was bestowed upon Deacon Sokol by the OCA Holy Synod in the spring.

Wow!

According to which Calendar will Vladika Peter celebrate at the OCA Parish?

Is Saints Peter & Paul Church (OCA) in Manville one of those rare Old Calendar OCA Parishes?

What will the reprecussians be?

Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!
Psalm 133:1

Let us thank God for these blessings and pray that more of these encounters take place in your small corner of the world and beyond.

Can someone explain to me the difference between a deacon and protodeacon, and a priest/presbyter and protopresbyter?

A Protodeacon is an honorific, usually given for long service, usually associated with a cathederal or a principal church. A protodeacon then may claim precedence when serving with other deacons. ( The old primacy thing again? Not the Pope of deacons, merely the first among them! LOL!) Protodeacon literally translates as "first deacon".

The vestments for a protodeacon differ from a deacon, in regards to the orar. The Orar of a protodiakon crosses his chest, whilst a deacons hangs straight down.

As regards a protopriest, again an honorific given to a priest usually for long service . It is the highest rank a priest can obtain, in the Russian tradition it includes the right to the nabredenik, palitza, mitre and double jeweled cross.

Hope that helps

Alexandr

Sorry, there are so many S. Vladimir's churches, cathesrals etc around. Which St. Vlad's are your referring to?

I am sorry, I was being naughty! I was referring to St Vladimir's Theological Academy, meaning the base of those who cringe at the mention of the name of ROCOR.

Give me a little bit, but the Carpatho-mountaineer Deacons sport a style more like the Russian protodeacon picture above. the orar goes around the waist.
Deacon Lance, Deacon El, anyone, please explain. I can't explain it as much as I could totally show you. I'll find a picture to show the differences in the small tradition. Sidenote, the Byzcaths and the ACROD wear the orar the same.

During the liturgy,a deacon will bind his orar. That could be what you are thinking of. But I am unfamiliar with an orar around the waist, and I have served in Presov and Michalovce.

ALEXANDR:

Do you think there is a confusion with the way a subdeacon wears his liturgical vetsments?

That is possible as well, although, I would be very pleasantly surprised to learn that people have actually been exposed to a subdeacon serving!
