Wow...it was the all-church channel this week. We swung through Terre Haute, IN on our way back from St. Louis. After spending the night, we hit the Clabber Girl Museum and noted that the founder gave money to help build St. Benedict's. Well, on our way back to the freeway we saw a BIG church...not quite as large as the St. Louis Cathedral, but still impressive. We went inside and were stunned...it was very beautiful, laid out in a Greek cross. Apparently it burned in the 1930's and the parishioners literally gave their pennies to save it. It is still quite beautiful...and they are considering placing the tabernacle back on the high altar. http://www.stbenedictth.org/

St. Benedicts parish began as Abraham Lincoln was completing his first term as President. It is fitting that this brochure ends with a line from one of his speeches of 1864, the year of St. Benedicts founding: Bless all the churches, and blessed be God who giveth us the churches.

You just missed the newly glorified St. Theodore Guerin at St. Mary of the Woods near West Terre Haute.

Saw an interesting clip of a Baptist guy who was cured of blindness through her intercession. He was on his way to converting to the faith. Amazing. Stephanos I

I feel like I am re-living my past through your travels. I grew up in St. Louis, so was quite familiar with the cathedral. And I went to college in Terre Haute. I didn't have a car at the time, so I attended the Mass on-campus, but on occasion I would hitch a ride with someone over to St. Benedict's. It was, by far, the best church in the city. I had forgotten the name, but I definitely remember the building.

I like churches that LOOK extraordinary...if I want a theater or a warehouse, I'll go to one.
Our normal parish is an older build, gutted by Vatican II (nothing left of the altar, apparently...just a paneled gap). The odd thing is that the crucifix is on in one of the "wings" of the cruciform layout, and there's a huge mural of Mary behind where the altar is (looks original).
So it almost appears as if we're worshipping Mary and Jesus is stuck off to the side. <shrug>
At least the pastor is willing to run a Tridentine as an "experience" for the parish during Lent (and the music minister is willing to run some plainchant worshops next summer).
