Nor have I every met any traditionalist who would use a fiddleback vestment just because the "liberals" hate, hate, hate them, as someone claimed
Me neither.
My traditionalist RC friend says that he gets really annoyed when people treat him as a mere "museum stuff" freak. He says that traditionally-minded Latins favor/support everything that highlights the uniqueness and sanctity of Divine Liturgy and priests - and that's all.
For example, gothic style chasuble is said to be too "ordinary". It may (?) resemble a broad raincoat or a kind of costume worn by women here and there. Besides, these modern chasubles are quite often stripped of every religious symbol and made of very cheap and very ugly material.
So the main reasons why he prefers fiddle-shaped vestments are: 1/ they doesn't resemble any popular lay clothings, 2/ very often they are just masterpieces (generally: the older - the more beautiful).
Let me digress here. Although of Armenian origin I was born and raised in RC Church. I started to explore Armenian tradition not only because I was interested in my Ancestors' heritage. I think modern RC liturgy is lacking something. I don't know how to pin it down... The New Mass is more "earthly", and a bit too simplified.
I remember my first attendance on Divine Liturgy in Armenian Catholic church. I was amazed. After I left the first thought that came to my mind was: "God is REALLY on the first place here".
So I can understand our good tradies.
I do not fully agree with them but I can understand them.
God bless,
Krikor (Gregory)
