Happy Thanksgiving Day (USA) to all who follow the Julian Calendar (this is, after all, the 4th Thursday of November on the Julian Calendar and the Feast of St. Nicholas is still 13 days away).

As you sit down to your turkey dinners and offer prayers of thanksgiving please remember the participants and readers of this Forum!

The big Thanksgiving football match-up is between the Washington Redskins and the Chicago Bears. It will be carried on the NFL Network tonight at 8 PM (locally here in Washington, WDCA-TV 20).

Ha Ha Ha. We can't have a turkey dinner today - we are in the midst of the Nativity Fast. biggrin

But you are right about one thing - St Nicholas Day is indeed 13 days away! smile

Father David:

Asking for your blessing and your holy prayers.

Is it not the case that some Orthodox jurisdictions allow a relaxation of the Fast for Thanskgiving Day? Does yours?

Kissing your holy right hand,

Dear Bob,

May the Lord bless you.

Jurisdictions on the Old Calendar do not face this situation very often. In the last ten years, I think Thanksgiving fell within the Nativity Fast once. To answer your question succinctly: neither the Synod of Bishops, nor any individual Bishop, of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia issues any kind of dispensation from keeping the fast on Thanksgiving Day when it falls in the Nativity Fast, nor, for that matter, for Independance Day since it always falls in the Apostles' Fast.

That being said, it is my opinion that no one has the authority to dispense others from keeping a fast prescribed by the holy fathers. Not a Bishop, and certainly not a priest. Each Christian must make this decision for himself and take the responsibility upon himself.

My opinion about Christmas Lent is this: The Nativity Fast is a forty day fast. The number has a significance. Thirty-nine days is not forty days.

When Thanksgiving Day falls within the Nativity Fast, my immediate family (who are all Orthodox Christians) keep the fast. We make a turkey, gravy, etc. for all the people at our table who are not fasting (we had 36 this year!) and we ourselves eat the many foods which do not contain meat. (I must admit we are not too scupulous about foods containing dairy on Thanksgiving blush) Perhaps we serve a nice fish stuffed with crab meat stuffing in addition to the turkey. Thanksgiving can still be Thanksgiving without the Turkey! biggrin

The last time Thanksgiving Day fell within the Fast, we just had Thanksgiving a week early. I mean, why not? It is a secular holiday, and no rubrics are disturbed.

How about a translation for us English speakers? smile Hey, even if you can only give a French translation, that would be good! grin

Dear Father David,

Bless.

With all due respect to our beloved Father Stephanos, (who doesn't make a habit of this like some other posters) I have asked for translations from posters many times on this forum!

Usually something is said in Slavic, sometimes something is said in Latin, and always, I don't understand it! frown

On the other hand, when I post something in Greek, I always translate it.

I think that reading other languages is only fun if we can learn something...if we don't understand what is being said, we might as well be reading Klingon! wink

If I remember correctly, they might have been 'grunt' and 'growl'!

Father David:

Father bless!!

Egg on my face--I failed to remember the calendar difference of days. Of course Thanksgiving would only fall within the Fast once in awhile. I was thinking of some New Calendar parishes with which I am familiar who do the dispensation.

I've said before that I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed!! LOL biggrin

In Christ,

BOB
