Slava Isusu Khrystu!
I would like to know what the correct name is for the headress worn by Byzantine Bishops. It is a type of mitre with a veil in the back. Some of them are white and others are black. I'm not sure what it is called. Any assistance is appreciated.
Thank you!
Klobuk is the Russian name. The Klobuk is not actually an episcopal headgear,
per se, but monastic headgear. (All Bishops, at least in the Russian tradition, are monks. The Klobuk becomes episcopal by having a little cross affixed to the cetre front of it, but it is still the
non-liturgicalheadgear of a Bishop. The
liturgical headgear of a Bishop is indeed called a mitre. But the Byzantine form of the episcopal mitre is like a crown with a tiny Cross at the very top. To complicate matters, in the Russian Church, certain high ranking priests - Archimandrites (like Fr Serge, I believe) and Mitred Archpriests - are awarded the right to wear the mitre. Though when a priest wears the mitre, it is
not surmounted by the Cross.
