Alex I'd like to see other people's answers to this, but others may not look at this and answer under the current heading. Why not start a new thread with this? I'm not sure how to separate threads. Can our Moderator help us? Fr David Straut

Alex:
One of my favorite icons is the one of the Virgin of Perpetual Help. The icon of the Virgin of Iviron is also very beautiful and there is a magnificent newer shrine to Our Lady in Poland and there is an icon there under the title of Our Lady of Lichen. I have seen the original icon of the Virgin of Perpetual Help in the Church of Saint Alphonsus in Rome, Italy. I have also seen the original icon of the Virgin of Kazan when it was housed at the Byzantine Greek Catholic Chapel in Fatima, Portugal.
Take care,
John Doucette

Dear Father David,
Bless!
I have put in a request to Father Anthony to separate this thread. If anyone can do it, it is he,because he is much better with this program than I am, or ever will be!

Alice John and Alice, OLPH is also my favorite icon. I went to parochial school run by the Redemptorists, who are the custodians of the original icon in Rome. I still have a holy card of OLPH that was given to me in the fourth grade. I have always been attracted to the intensity of Our Lady's eyes, as if she sees right into my soul. In my high school days, I prayed to OLPH for a favor that a person told me was not possible to happen. Well, Our Lady proved that person wrong. The favor was received. This past August, I was blessed to finally see the original icon of OLPH in person during my trip to Rome. I received special permission to get right up to the icon. The icon is so beautiful in person!

This past August, I was blessed to finally see the original icon of OLPH in person during my trip to Rome. I received special permission to get right up to the icon. What a blessing! I also think that this is one of the most aesthetically beautiful, while still remaining very spiritual, icons of our blessed Lady Theotokos. Everything about it, is, to me, is perfect--the balance of the angels, the balance and predominance of our Lady in the frame, the gold background, the face of our Lady, her beautiful crown, the proportions...it is abstract and Byzantine, yet not too abstract...I think that it is an artistic masterpiece befitting the beauty and the glory of our all holy, ever Virgin Mary and Mother of our God! The icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help truly is an artistic and spiritual bridge between the cultural divide of East and West! That is another reason I love this icon! Most Holy Theotokos save us! Alice

Ah, what a lovely idea for a thread! My personal favorite, and one that I have great devotion to, is one not widely known in the west, the Donskaya Bozhie Mater, the Virgin of the Don. Link [ belygorod.ru] It is the tradition that this icon was brought by the Cossacks of the Don to Prince Dmitri Ivanovich before the Battle of Kulikovo in 1380 to help the Prince defeat the Tartars in that decisive battle that began to free the Russian land from Tartar subjugation and invasions. The famous iconographer Theophanes the Greek wrote it at around that time. In 1591 victory in another important battle against the Tartars was credited to this icon. Alexandr

OH - I see my post didn't get moved over Well I like my Avatar . To me it's a very beautiful Icon full of meaning. The one I use is, I understand French ,and to be found in a Cathedral in France [ can't see me getting my husband there I have to say but mebbe one day ] This is also the Icon before which St Seraphim of Sarov prayed. On my Icon shelf I have the Icon Joy of all Joys - in a silver frame with a relic of St Seraphim tucked in , and a small triptych of St Seraphim and the bear on the left , Joy of all Joys in the centre , and St Seraphim in prayer before the Icon on the right.

Dear Friends,
For me, the icon of St Seraphim of Sarov the "Joy of all Joys" is the one that is most prominently displayed in my home and I wear a beautiful medal with her on one side and St Seraphim standing beside the Diveyevo Monastery with his Lestovka and praying to her in Heaven on the other.
The very many miraculous Icons of the Theotokos is my enthusiasm, the images that are the Holy Protection of various countries and areas, local icons and their feasts.
To praise the Most Holy Theotokos is to be brought closer to her Son, she brings us closer to Him whenever we honour her.
Her Rosary/Rule with added words to each Hail Mary to reflect the Mysteries is a great thing as well!
When one prays and meditates in this way, one can feel the Theotokos guiding one and bringing one into a deeper reflection.
St Theophane Zatvornik or the Recluse (to whom Pope John Paul II had a personal devotion and loved to read his writings on the Jesus Prayer especially) once said that: Just as our mothers nourish us from their bodies, so too does the Most Pure Mother of God nourish us on the Body and Blood of OLGS Jesus Christ in the Most Sacred Mysteries of Holy Communion. For He took His Flesh from her blood."
For the Mystery of Light celebrating Holy Communion, one may add to the Hail Mary's: "For you have given birth to Christ the Saviour (with Whom you nourish us in Holy Communion) the Redeemer of our souls."
It is also a great experience to recite the Magnificat immediately after receiving Holy Communion. Her words become our own in a very special way at that time.
May the sacred icons of the Most Holy Theotokos be on our walls, on our persons and everywhere we go to light up our way to Christ and as tokens of her sacred and protective presence in our lives.
When the Holy Spirit finds someone who is filled with the love for and the spirit of the Most Holy Theotokos, He most assuredly does in that soul what He did in the Theotokos so many years ago - He forms in us the full stature of OLGS Jesus Christ, God the Word Incarnate.
Most Holy Theotokos save us!
Her unworthy slave,
Alex
