As today is the feast of Our Lady of Guadelupe, I give honour to what may be one of the holiest icons of all time--because, though it may not be Byzantine or Slavic, it was written by Our Lady herself! You can't beat that!
Our Lady Theotokos of Guadelupe, pray unto God for the salvation of our souls, Alice

Is the Our Lady of Guadalupe image considered an icon? It is definately one of my favorites.
I also love the image of The Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and one icon that truly stirs my soul is the Sitka Mother of God icon. I think it is her eyes that affect me most...her gaze is so penetrating yet so gentle...difficult to describe.
God bless and keep you....

Dear Doubting Thomas,
Our Lady of Guadalupe is not an icon in the formal sense, but it is venerated by Eastern Christians, especially in countries with a Latin majority. (There are versions of the Guadalupe image done as icons, but I believe it would still be considered a Western devotion - not that there's anything wrong with that!).
As for the issue of images of the Theotokos that have appeared miraculously - in fact there are MANY such images and icons that are honoured through the Orthodox world especially - Our Lady of Guadalupe, as holy as it is, is not a stand-alone in this respect.
The traditions associated with miraculous icons in the East, more often than not, focus on miraculous events that begin the veneration of this or that icon.
There is another old tradition saying that the particular icon/image of the Theotokos that one is most devoted to is as a result of God's plan in the first instance!

Dear Alex,
Thank you for your explanation. As for the tradition of God's plan involving one's particular devotion to the Theotokos, that is beautiful! I can definately think of no other reason that I am so drawn to the icons/images which I cherish.
God bless and keep you....

To be tied down to one favorite is difficult indeed - I think it would have to be the Znamennie or the Mother of God of the Sign. I also especially love the Yaroslavl Mother of God as well, and the Mother of God of the Pecherska Lavra with Sts. Antony and Theodosius on the sides.

Dear Father DIAKone!
Speaking of Our Lady of Guadalupe, there is an icon of the Pechersk Mother of God in one of the Churches of the Lavra that miraculously appeared on the wall behind the altar . . .
Met. Ilarion Ohienko used to say that the icon of Pechersk is to Eastern Ukraine what the Pochaiv icon is to Western Ukraine.
I also understand that archeologists working in the Caves Lavra are uncovering the tombs of saints that were buried beneath rubble due to earthquakes and cave-ins over the centuries - happily their name-plates are preserved and they will be formally added to the list of the Choir of the Kyivan Pechersk Saints (the largest urban Choir of Saints anywhere in the world, as you know).
