After being passed up for a promotion where I was vastly more qualified then the person who recieved it (but she is good friends with the manager who chose), I felt compelled to post this poll. I sit behind a desk for 8.5 hours a day running reports. This isn't right. Men are not supposed to be doing this. It's unnatural. I also spend 2 hours in traffic every day. I feel myself getting more and more unhealthy (mentally and physically). My life IS Office Space, and I'm slowly going insane. I do have a side business that God Willing will some day be my full time business. I try to find time between my driving in rush hour traffic, work, and sleep to continue its growth. I just hope God helps me grow it enough to escape the hell I'm in right now before I totally lose my mind! Which brings me to the question of how many of you are happy with your careers?

Oh, and this brings me to a quote from Fight Club that seems to fit sort of into how I feel: ...an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars...We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. And here's one from Office Space that fits in nicely too: ...we don't have a lot of time on this earth! We weren't meant to spend it this way. Human beings were not meant to sit in little cubicles staring at computer screens all day, filling out useless forms and listening to eight different bosses drone on about about mission statements.

Well, the alternative is joining a carpenter's or laborer's union. No office, no cubicle, etc...
It seems men were meant for that work.
I should have done it straight out of high school. There are laborers from back home who make 80K who barely graduated from high school. That's 80K a year where most houses are from 80-120K per year. Where the cost of living is very low.
Notice on the poll that the 30-50 year olds hate their jobs.

Actually, I'm in the running for a position with the Pipefitters Union.
I passed the test, but now I need to be interviewed and I have NO experience. They take ten out of 47, so my chances are slim.
Starting wage would but $2/hour more then I make now plus FULL Benefits. In five years you start making around $70k with full benefits.

Also, I complain, but it's my own fault. I should have either went to school for a more practical degree, or continued to get my masters. The student loans are killing me. A BA in Political Science and International Relations is worthless unless you continue to get a Masters.

Any young person going to university needs a practical skill with which to make a living. And there are too many degrees granted that do not have that built into it. BOB

I chose 19-30 instead of 30-50. Thanks for the option.

Don't feel too bad, I had a patient who now works for a logistics and shipping company who has a degree in Soviet Relations and History or something like that.

With regards to my degree in political science and international relations it may come in handy because someday I'd like to run for office with the ideals of freedom and liberty only to let the power corrupt me and rule with an iron fist.

NATHAN: My grandfather used to say that anyone who went into politics would come out corrupt if he wasn't already corrupt going in. Uusally there are three avenues that lead a politician to corruption--booze (or drugs), women, or money. Which is your weakness? BOB

Now that it's in the open, when I'm in office, I'm going to have lobbyists tempting me with payoffs of ales and lagers.

Nathan,
Don't let bitterness or sarcasm overshadow the positive side(s) of your situation. You have a job. That is a strength. You have a college degree. There's another one for you. In the long run, the current bosses may come looking for your help to solve problems they haven't a clue about.
God is Good! I read somewhere that we should accept everything from His hands (even when it hurts), because eventually, greater good will emerge.
Patience of course is key!
Prayers for you and yours! A student

Nathan: You've proven that the job hasn't destroyed your sense of humor. Take the advice above me and my pm. It's right on! BOB
