Dear Friends,

Just thought a thread on the Oriental Orthodox would be in order. Our Oriental Orthodox and Catholic members could inform us about their Churches and traditions, especially Nativity traditions - please . . .

I wouldn't presume to speak for my Armenian, Coptic, Ethiopian, or Eritrean brethren, but I can say a little about the Malankara and Syriac Churches; Mor Ephrem is another poster who I'd consider an expert in the subject.

One interesting characteristic to note:
Eastern Orthodox/Catholics share a common Liturgy with local variation. Most Oriental Orthodox/Catholics differ in the Liturgy (exception are the Syriac and Malankara Churches, which share the St. James Liturgy but vary in local use and custom) but share the same faith.

Syriac/Malankara vestments:
http://sor.cua.edu/Vestments/

Music:
Our hymnody makes use of eight tones, which vary depending on the commemoration, fast, feast, etc.

Hello,

Here are some refrences that I have regarding the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
http://www.eotc-mkidusan.org/English/
http://www.ethiovirginmary.org/archives/archives.htm
http://www.bethel.edu/~letnie/EthiopiaHomepage.html
http://www.dskmariam.org

Website for Ethiopian spiritual songs
http://www.tewahedo.org/back22.html

A good book for the African Orthodoxy:
Wade in the river by Father Paisius Altschul

Famous Ethiopian saints:
st. Frumentius
st. yared, he is like st. Romanos the melodist in Eastern Orthodoxy, here is a link
http://www.st-gebriel.org/Styared/gab_yared_music.htm
st. gebre menfes kidus
st. Tekla Haimanot (http://www.st-takla.org/Story-index.html)

Also, I have a power point presentation for the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, you could pm me your email and I could send it as attachement.

Thank you, Khalid !

I'm copying and pasting your entire post to my computer so that I can save your me references. I love the famous St. George church --that was cut out of the rock-- and I would like to learn more about the Ethiopian Orthodox Church overall.

Christos Razjajetsja! (Christ is Born!)
Slavite Jeho! (Glorify Him!)

Thank you so much for the information. This is fascinating. The more I learn the more I realize how little I know. I love that feeling. It's humbling and exhilarating at the same time!

Keep it coming.

A few years back I had research the claim that the Ark was in Ethiopia.

Fascinating.

Great idea for a thread, Alex! I have a question, actually. In what way do the Oriental Orthodox and Catholics make the Sign of the Cross?

God bless and keep you....

Christos Razdajetsja! (Christ is Born!)
Slavite Jeho! (Glorify Him!)

And do they make the mytania (deep bow) as we do in the Byzantine Ruthenian Church? Do they have the same kind of icons, if they have them? What do the interiors of the churches look like? I haven't had time to check out the links posted. School resumes tomorrow for my son and I haven't had time to do much of anything, between being with him and the other things going on over the holidays.

I understand that there are claims that the Ark of the Covenant was carried there by the son of the Queen of Sheba and the King of Israel. Solomon, I believe it was. Telemachus? Was that the son's name? It's a bit fuzzy. But it is supposed to be kept in a church in Ethiopia that no one is allowed to enter except for one priest, who is it's caretaker.
