Some vegetarian friends of mine have kindly invited me to dinner tomorrow (unfortunately they live too far for me to get there), and enclosed the menu. Others may also enjoy reading it:

With all prayers and good wishes for
the Feast of the Nativity
(according to the Western Calendar)

We will be celebrating the day with a Russian festive meal
(adapted for vegetarian tastes)!

Christmas Day Menu



Oplatek (�Bread of Angels�) with honey rose syrup
Roasted walnuts and almonds
accompanied by Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve 1993 Champagne

Entr�e

Borsch with Pomegranate
served with Pagach (�Lenten bread�)
accompanied by Smirnoff Triple Distilled Premium Vodka

Main course

Baked �goose� with apple and walnut stuffing
served with a festive mulled wine reduction
and
Courgette latkes with cream cheese and beetroot shavings
Black pepper and rosemary Hassleback potatoes
Braised chestnuts in red wine gravy
accompanied by John Loxton McLaren Valley Shiraz 2000
and Wolf Blass Grey Label Cabernet Sauvignon 2002

Dessert

Spiced winter pudding with cinnamon cream
accompanied by Moet and Chandon 1996 Vintage Champagne

Followed by

Kutya (bulgar Christmas pudding)
Medianyk (Russian Christmas cake)
accompanied by Elliot Rock Estate Ice Wine Semillon 2005
followed by Courvoisier VSOP Fine Champagne Cognac

Believe me, if I could get there I wouldn't be sitting here and writing this! What I may do is ask my friends for the recipes and try to duplicate the menu.

Except for the quotes around goose, that sounds like a heavenly dinner...

Nan, who doesn't eat much meat, which is entirely different from being a vegetarian.

Our daughters boyfriend made a crawfish cheesecake and a babeque shrimp cheesecake for Christmas dinner yesterday. They were excellent! Bet you can't guess where hales from biggrin
