Don't they do something like this in Russia for the Theophany?
Don't they dive for the Bishop's Cross?

My Mom's youngest brother was a member of the Chicago Polar Bear Club, and for years he'd take a dip in Lake Michigan every New Year's Day. He was known for extreme behaviour though and also liked doing things like taking bets in bars that he could do a backflip on the sidewalk after several drinks. He was still taking other guys drinking money into his 30's.

Don't they dive for the Bishop's Cross? Yes, and the Greeks do this as well...although I might venture to say that the Mediterranean is a tad more inviting in January than other bodies of water! BRRRR! If you are ever near Tarpon Springs Florida around this time of year, I understand that the cross diving ceremony by the local Greek Orthodox is a large attraction. Whoever retrieves the Cross will have 'good luck'-- MIND YOU, as my priest said this morning, 'good luck' should be translated in the Christian vernacular into 'a blessing'. So, I will clarify more appropriately by saying that whoever retrieves the Cross will have a blessing. Two years ago, the Ecumenical Patriarch officiated: http://www.sptimes.com/2006/01/06/Northpinellas/Tarpon_s_Epiphany_spe.shtml

Those thirty pounds, while not good for your health, would definitely help keep you warm if you decide to go New Year's day diving today!

I must lose at least 10 pounds and then keep it off.
Easier said than done.
Pray for me a sinner.

I could save on heating bills with my extra girth! Sadly the weight is well under the skin, where the nerves are that sense heat and cold. If anything, those with added girth have, hmm, expanded "Surface area" have MORE places to feel hot or gold... That being said, anyone who thinks this is a good tradition can, as my mother would say "go jump in a lake!" Happy New Year!

The custom in the part of Sweden that my grandmother came from was to take a steam bath and then run out and jump into the icy lake. Supposedly the run to the lake didn't register because the body was very warm to start with. I always thought that such a shock to the body could stop the heart, but there are brave souls out there who love this type of thing. BOB

The local Melkite parish 10 years ago put up a Russian man whose daughter while studying in the US had been in a terrible car accident that took months of recuperation...
"George" spoke little English, I spoke littke Russian (but was learning). When it snowed in the morning I would spot him out in the snow in running shorts and nothing else rubbing snow on his chest and arms.
"George, what are you doing?!?!?"
"Is good for... (pounds chest) heart!" Then he would take a dramatic deep breath and saunter back inside.
Maybe he was unto something.

BOB I saw a show on television about this...apparently it is also the custom in parts of Russia as well... Alice
