I have sauteed them in olive oil too and they were very good....I only use olive oil these days...I have seen the health benefits of extra virgin olive oil first hand in the Mediterranean...

It's that sharp taste, maybe a little more acidic or "metalic" to my tongue, that scares me of random picking. I'll look into that. Maybe there's a German grocery store in town.
Terry Terry, Look for "Bavarian" style sauerkraut. It doesn't have that sharp taste of regular sauerkraut. There's a little sweetness to it that tones down the sourness. My kids won't eat the regular stuff but they like this. My wife buys it in a jar or can at the grocery store. A deli should have it fresh or you could find a recipe to make your own. Bill

I will look for the Bavarian style. There's a nice polish grocery store near where I live, but maybe I'll try to make some.
I have an excellent Polish cookbook, I remember several sauerkraut recipes in there. It is titled "Old Warsaw Cookbook", if I remember right.
