I just ran across an article on the message from Patriarch Alexy II to Pope John Paul II for Christmas. Full article is here:

InterFax News [interfax.ru]

Here the opening paragraph:
MOSCOW. Dec 22 (Interfax) - The head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Alexy II, has sent Christmas greetings to Pope John Paul II, inviting the Roman Catholic leader to "resume our brotherly contacts."

Peace,
David Cheney

Slava Jesu Kristu,

I think there has been entirely too much criticism of the Russian Orthodox and their Patriarch lately. To really understand Alexii II, one has to understand Russia. Orthodoxy is more than a religion to the Russians. It is who they are. Alexii has done a wonderful job restoring some of the lost soul of Holy Mother Russia. I would encourage anyone to visit the ROC MP Website and view their links to video of the destruction and consequent rebuilding of Christ the Savior Cathederal. It shows some of the horrors inflicted on the Russian Church. Alexii is helping to heal some of those wounds.
Personnaly, even as a devout Ruthenian Catholic, I do not blame Alexii for being wary of us. We have money and power that his Church lost 70 years ago. He has a right as first Bishop of Russia to protect his flock.
I say, let the ROC rebuild itself for a few centuries then we can talk about better cooperation between our churches. I don't understand why we need to be in such a hurry.

When the charismatics and the protestantized pseudo-catholic groups leave Russia, then we'll see.

Glory to Jesus Christ!

Dear Dmitri,

Greetings down in New Orleans!

You wrote, "I don't understand why we need to be in such a hurry." I think we need to hurry because we are living in the end times. We won't know the day or hour. We must be prepared now... actually, yesterday. The scandal, weakness, and confusion of a divided body demand loving attention.

Someone on this list published a link to an address Metropolitan Nicholas (ACROC) gave to the US NCCB. Metropolitan Nicholas noted that between East and West, there is a window. Sometimes it is open wide, other times less.
Taking off from there, we are so used to that wall and window, that we've forgotten that it shouldn't be there in the first place. I wish the bishops would hurry and remember that we should "commit ourselves and one another to Christ, our God."

A blessed Christmas to you all!

God bless,
Christopher

Slava Jesu Kristu,

My Dear Armenian Brother,

Although I do feel the last days are upon us, I still do not feel we should rush. Our reunion should be smooth, not hurried. Centuries of seperation must be handled delicately. I don't feel that the ROC is ready yet. It must have time to heal its own wounds. After all, there are at least three different branched of the ROC is North Americal alone. Let them unify first and then they and us will have a better idea of what is really the Russian Orthodox.

Dmitri

(Bye the way, it is about 65 degrees outside today, so much for a white Christmas in Dixie. It is always a little odd to wear shorts on Christmas Eve.)

Yes, here in Georgia it's a little rainy right now but yesterday it was a good 70 degrees and right now it's about 60. Just the way I like it.

Off Topic Question:

Could you please tell me if the Greek Catholic Church of Krizevci and Macedonia, celebrates according to the Julian Calendar (used by their Orthodox brothers of Serbia and Macedonia)??

Unfortunately I will neither be going to Midnight Mass or a Divine Liturgy- - -my family is Methodist and I can't drive for another 9 days.

But I'll be at one for Theophany!

Clearly you ARE Called to be Old Calendar!!! cool When you you will be able to drive to BOTH Nativity AND Theophany Services. In fact you will even be able to catch most of the ForeFeast, including the Sunday of the Holy Fathers!

And since our Latin Sister Church has no old Calendarist parishes....ergo et voila: this can only mean that you are called to be one of US!!! smile

So logic dictates, we're still in the running, n'est-ce pas? "Y'all, just gotta do the Maths."

Haha, thanks for the positive reinforcement, Herb.

Alas, I believe I'll have to go to Roman Catholic services; the closest Orthodox church (if I'm gonna be Old Calendar, of course!) is an hour 15. away in Atlanta, and my parents will be far from letting my drive that distance alone after a few days of having my license. wink

But of course the Eastern Catholic Churches are still in the running- - -just as much as the traditional Roman rite! How can one choose?

The patiarch of Moscow, paranoid as he is.Is not going to burn his bridges with Rome.So far John Paul II has kept the people who would treat Russia like a mission teritory or those extreme fatimaists at bay. If he decides that the Russians are just impossible to deal with he may give up and just let these forces loose.Than the patriarch will know what proselytising realy is !

What I really don't like and fear is that when Moscow starts talking in a "friendly way" with Rome, there are usually second intentions, and usually the second intention is "Ukraine"! What really bothers me about all of this is that Ukraine is put on a table of negotiations as if it were some kind of object. And who is to blame? Moscow? Rome? Both?
I will leave that question up for all of you to decide and comment on.
