I find no reason to poke fun at the President. This is very different than when Bill Clinton consumed the Eucharist. President Bush is showing respect, Clinton only thought he was.

I'd have to zoom in very close, but the lighting looks off in luminosity and direction. It looks like President Bush is hit with an incandescent light from one source, and the Orthodox priests are bathed in natural light from multiple sources.
What is in his left hand? It looks like he's holding someone's hand but that would be odd in that shot.

Hate to say it - but it's genuine - saw it being set up on TV tonight - came in and saw it on the goggle box - and nearly dropped.
No ,definitely not photoshopped

The abbot (or Bishop? I am ignorant in reading Eastern monastic attire) just to the left of the President - why is he wearing three Panagia (I think that's what they are called, the fancy pendants with an icon on them).
Here is an opportunity for you all to educate me!

Sieglinde The man to whom you refer is His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilus III of Jerusalem. By the way, I am not sure who the Hierarch is with whom President Bush is holding hands. But I do think they are holding hands! Fr David Straut

Terry In the Clinton situation, part of the blame belongs to the priest, who should not have given the Eucharist to a non-Catholic. Same with Reagan. The Church has the responsibility to guard the Body & Blood of Christ.

"Hey, who's the guy without the beard and wearing the tie?!" [ Linked Image] Monomakh I think he is the Referee, called into the Church of the Nativity to stand in between the two groups of clergy when they next clean the Church.

It doesn't look real, it looks superimposed. Sorry. Father David: that little song was from Sesame Street. I remember all the songs quite well from my children's preschool days. Alice

Its very much real. President Bush is on a pilgrimage to the Holy sites as a Christian right now. Bush prays in Bethlehem amid sea of barricades [ breitbart.com] The president -- a fervent Christian -- landed by helicopter and then was whisked to the Church of the Nativity in a motorcade through streets largely deserted as part of a massive security operation aimed at protecting him.
After a short tour of the sixth century Byzantine church he descended into the Grotto of the Nativity, an underground chapel glimmering with hanging lanterns, where he lit a candle at the believed site of Jesus's birth.
"For those of us who practise the Christian faith, there isn't a more holy site than where our saviour was born," Bush said as he came out of the church. [ Linked Image]

I am disappointed that there is no mention of President Bush wanting to visit the Holy Sepulcher. Does anyone know why that might be? Do Evangelical Christians visit there?

This may not be true of Pres. Bush, but my experience growing up as an evangelical was being taught that the traditional Holy Sepulcher is the wrong one. I never ever heard of an evangelical who accepted the traditional one as legit. Jason

Some Evangelicals would visit, yes. The Holy Sepulcher never came into a discussion of doctrine or "church history" I witnessed. I don't imagine that President Bush is the type of Evangelical who would say "Catholics are the children of Satan, the Pope is the Anti-Christ!" An Evangelical of the latter viewpoint would not likely step into the ancient church.
The site of the Jewish temple plays a big role in some Evangelicals' eschatology.

I'd have to agree here, I have heard of various other points around Jerseulem as being the site.

Someone should remind the Patriarch: "Your Beatitude: a man is known by the company he keeps!"
As for the evangelicals/fundamentalists and the Church of the Resurrection, they normally visit the so-called "Garden Tomb" instead. Protestant services are regularly held there.

Although I did not vote for the president either time, I am very proud to see President Bush with the Orthodox clergy. So many Christians in America do not respect or regard the Apostolic Churches in the Holy Land. The pictures look beautiful and dignified. I am happy for the president visiting with them. I also cannot resist adding, I am very happy that President Bush insisted on the Palestinians having the their own home land in Palestine, as well as Israel.

So, why three panagia? Because he is the Patriarch, and the others are not? Would that be right?
