Does the priest who headed up the diaconate program in Philadelphia, without mentioning names, an rounder Italian? My four years at Overbrook taught me many witty sayings such as that.
If you go to his tomb at the Gesu in Rome, and put year ear next to the altar, legend has it that one can hear a constant rumbling sound (he's turning over in his grave).
The Jesuits have done alot of good; thought they were never the same - they developed a poor attitude - after their suppression of the late 18th Century. Let us pray for this conclave which will elect the next "black pope."

It's not the current head, but his predecessor, who mentioned to me that he is Sicilian by ancestry. He also mentioned that his last name is actually indicative of Greek ancestry, and that he probably should be with us Byzantines! Dn. Robert

Yep - he was the one in charge when I was there.
He'd be a great help if Byzantine - he can sing like nobody's business. My first college year there for our "Concert before Christmas" he sang, from memory, Tu Scendi della Stella which brought the house down (the big chapel - St. Martin's was packed to the gills.
It is my understanding that he has recently offered Holy Mass according to the Missal of Bl. John XXIII at his parish in the Northeast...
Good things are continuing to happen in Philadelphia!

Dear Dr Eric,
St Ignatius Loyola was a Basque, sir!
Last June, we travelled to the Shrine of Our Lady of Montserrat, high in the mountains (a white knuckle ride for my bride and myself, to be sure!).
It was there before "La Moreneta" that St Ignatius prayed all night in vigil before going off to found the Jesuits.
Interestingly enough, the grammar of the Basque language has many similarities with . . . Ukrainian.
Alex Alex, My apologies to the Basques who may have read that. It turns out that St. Francis Xavier was also a Basque. Are the Basques equivalent to Les Quebecois? Je me souviens, Eric

Those statistics, while grim, are not too surprising . . . I am curious however, as to how much of that change can be attributed to Vatican II, and how much is just the huge societal changes that have occured in that time. (Actually, I suspect the larger share IS Vatican II-related.)

Sort of a chicken and the egg question. Did the social change influence/hijack the implementation of Vatican II, or did the poor application of Vatican II engender lots of social change. I think some of the former but mostly the latter.
