I remember seeing something about the vestments in the picture here in the OCA newspaper some months ago. As I recall, it was designed by his wife using artwork from the children of his parish. I give him credit because he could have retired it and never put it on. But that might have had a negative impact on his little parishioners.

In Christ,

BOB

There are some nice vestment materials - and vestments made from those materials - at shops in Athens. If you ask them nicely, they will even do the embroidery for you and sew the vestments (I have some lovely vestments of Irish linen with green and gold embroidery, sewn for me in Athens).

Nevertheless, like everything we use in the church, the vestments are not intended to shock anyone. Those shown seem quite tasteless and inappropriate - sorry, but de gustibus non est disputandum!

A bit off topic, but I'll ask anyway: is it just me, or does the templon presented in the pictures not bear a striking resemblance to the medieval rood screens of Western Catholic churches?

I agree. It's kind of strange looking compared to the usual iconostas we're used to seeing.

The linen vestments sound quite tasteful. Should you get a chance, I would very much like to see a photo of them posted if you could.

A priest in the ArchE of Pittsburgh used to wear very simple conical vestments on occasion made of either a cotton blend a a really light wool (I am not sure which)in some vibrant but not shocking colors. That also had an appeal to me.

The vestment isn't my taste, but, well... all in all, after looking at all the photos, I don't think New Skete is easily shocked... And at his home parish people know the story of it...

I recall reading somewhere that its design was based upon the iconostasis in Hagia Sophia.

Personally, I've always been fascinated with New Skete's iconostasis. I like it very much.

There are some older churches in Rome with similar screens. St. Mark's in Venice also has one similar but it goes across the opening of the sanctuary and not around it as New Skete's does.

John,

Yes - the placement of the prothesis outside of the altar area is also quite interesting. From what I gather, that was also the traditional practice in Constantinople...and the deacons alone led a much simpler "Great Entrance".

Suggestion: visit the Byzantine Museum in Athens.
