I'm 47 yrs old, I've lived in the Chicago area for almost all of my life, and I have positively NEVER seen our roads in such a dangerous state of disrepair. I took someone to work at 5:30 am this morning, and when I picked them up at 4 pm, I spotted numerous new potholes along a 3 mile route that weren't there this morning. Now before anyone chimes in that this is an occurence we deal with every Winter, or that we are seeing more traffic on our roads then ever before, my reply is, we have had much greater weather changes in the past without this amount of damage, and roads that see relatively little traffic are also breaking up.

Personally I'd like to see a fraud investigation against those repairing the roads, as I have a suspicion this is being done to provide job security for certain people.

Well you know this is the big scandal!
There is a new paving material that last 3 times longer 30 instead of 10 years. But the Highway Repair Workers will not use it, doesnt give them enough work to keep them employed.
Not only does it last longer but it is safer to drive on. Imagine that.Talk about mad as he....l

Being a retired public works supervisor with 30 years of service, I can say it's not the workers who make the decisions on materials, schedules etc, city councilmen and divison managers do, with various incentives from the suppliers...

Those who work in the field with the elements always get the blame...

When I drive on a bad road I send my respects to our mayor who keeps all construction money downtown.

Bad thing is that I live 2 miles outside the city limits and can't vote against him!

See, if this is the case that tells me the Hwy Repair Workers need a better more imaginative Union & lobby. If this is true, then a good union Lobby would be pushing legislation to re-pave every last square inch of the state's existing roads... with generous over-time and travel compensation.

Some people just aren't very imaginative!

99% of major repaving projects on state or county roads go to a open bidding contract, large cities may do the work in-house but there are extreme pressures being applied to open them to outside bids...

Unions have had their ranks and powers reduced since the 80's...

Steel/iron etc structures and components are either made in India or Mexico last time I looked in '02.

Just follow the $ trail...

Well it's 3 days since I posted this, and the condition of roads has gotten still worse. Tonight it was on FOX News at 10pm. One guy interviewed said he hit a pothole on North Lake Shore Drive, blew out his tire, and then barely had space to pull over at the side of the road because so many other cars were out of commission. What's their answer ? We need a $40 a year county tax to pay for road repairs.

I've seen several areas that receive a fair amount of traffic that are holding up much better than other roads, leading me to believe that better materials are being used in some areas. What this really needs is an investigation for fraud, with criminal charges if necessary due to the fact that this is becoming life threatening.

Lawrence,

If they glue heat resistant tiles to the space shuttle, and foam to the external fuel tank, what makes you think that there is a advanced road material ? wink

Have patience, in no time the earth will warm so much that the roads won't ice up. Then you won't have to worry as much about the pot holes.

And they say global warming is a bad thing.

The one which led to the Icelandic founding of Greenland and expanded the arable land by many hectares?
