I am looking for an ORIGINAL copy of St. Mary's (Johnstown PA) 50th Anniversary commemorative book, published in 1945. I collect Byzantine Catholic and Orthodox parish histories. I have about 1,000 volumes in the collection. St. Mary's, in addition to being an architectural jewel, is the mother church of about a dozen Orthodox and Byzantine Catholic (Rusyn and Ukrainian) parishes in Cambria County PA.

Do you have one for Sts Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic in Portage Pa? That was my fathers parish when he was growing up in Pa. If so, would you consider selling it?

I don't have a copy, but maybe Djs can find one for you, as that is his "home" parish. I could send you a GCU Kalendar photo showing the orginal interior of the present church, including the one-tier ikonostas. PM your direct address to me and I'll e-mail you the photo.

John & Jim,

I hope you liked the archival photo of St. Mary (Pokrov) interior with original ikonostas. Still waiting to here if the parish will install a new ikonostas during their current renovation project. I would love to walk into the parish someday and see a totally Byzantine interior, Daj Bozhe! smile

I found pictures of the renovated St. Mary in Johnstown on the New Guild Studio website. It's beautifully done, but still no iconostasis. Are they planning one? Here's the link:

I really hope an Iconostas is in the works. What they have done so far is too beautiful to not include one.

I saw what it was like inside 4 years ago, and they really have done an impressive job!

I'd really be suprised if it happens. Then again, nobody ever thought they would see actual Byzantine iconography in the church.

Ung--are you asking me? If so, I never received that picture from you.

My understanding of the matter - and this goes back many decades - is that they sold the original icon-screen to a Ukrainian parish around the time of the court case over the Johnstown parish (when, presumably, Bishop Basil Takach's supporters needed money to pay for their side of the litigation). I can't vouch for the truth of this, but it's what I was told back around 1961.

Fr. Serge
